Dear BTs: Let me explain ad hominem.

A particularly stupid Blogging Tory:

Torture claiming professor owed Iffy huge debt

Steve Janke digs into the background of Dr Amir Attaran who alleges that detainees in Afghanistan were deliberately transferred so that torture could be used to extract information and that he has uncensored documents proving it...

Janke finds out that the good doctor just happens to owe Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff a big favour for defending him when he was about to be kicked out of the Carr Center

A definition:

Translated from Latin to English, "Ad Hominem" means "against the man" or "against the person."

An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument.

Are we done here? Yeah, I think we're done here.

I asked Janke for proof that Amir is a "close personal friend" of Iggy. He promptly deleted my comment.

*Sigh*.

To paraphrase an old saying, trying to engage a Blogging Tory intellectually is like trying to teach a pig to sing. It's a waste of time and it annoys the pig.

Well, annoying the pig sometimes has its benefits.

annoying a blogging tory is better though. especially if you're not even pretending to try to teach it, but just poking it in its cage.

Good luck trying to disabuse the wingnuts of the belief that ad hominem just means name-calling.
