In the midst of all of the rest of the sketchiness and unaccountability that is Rebel News' "Fight the Fines" campaign, there is one fascinating detail that I fear is going unappreciated, and that is the open admission by Der Rebel that they don't actually believe unabashedly in their own legal applications, but are crowdfunding hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight them, anyway.

From several days ago, while reporting on having their legal idiocy regarding the constitutionality of "COVID jails" kicked to the curb, Rebel commander and Obergruppenfuhrer Ezra Levant openly admitted:

"not completely unexpected?" This is a far cry from Rebel's typically shrieking hyperbole about a shocking, appalling travesty of justice, or what have you.

This was followed by Alberta bureau chief and Miss Red Deer Farm Implement of 2009 Sheila Gunn Reid making the same tepid concession regarding the case of cafe owner Chris Scott:

If one didn't know better, one might think that the legal powerhouses behind all of this crowdfunding knew from the beginning that they were on shaky ground, but when you have a following with bulging wallets and minimal critical thinking ability, well ... you can finish that train of thought.

And by "astronomical," we mean profit.

Rebel News chief journalist and Linda Belcher impersonator Sheila Gunn Reid publicly acknowledges the "astronomical" expense incurred in defending a single, racist, bigoted, homophobic, law-breaking street preacher:

It's public knowledge that Rebel News/Ezra Levant lost both of the recent anti-SLAPP motions against him:

and one of the clear directives of that legislation (now that the intellectual defectives on the bench here in Ontario have finally figured out how the legislation works) is that the unsuccessful plaintiff is responsible for not only his own legal costs, but the full and unabridged amount of the costs of the successful defendant he tried to SLAPP.

I have heard from moderately (un)reliable sources that, in the case of Ezra's failed defamation action against the Al Jazeera news outlet, Al Jazeera is seeking $270,000 in costs; Rebel's counsel has apparently already indicated that his firm was paid over $50,000, which means that, in the end (and barring any major changes due to the inevitable appeal), Ezra/Rebel is quite possibly on the hook for some $320,000, and that doesn't take into account the same logic applied to Ezra's crushed action against Brendan Demelle and the Narwhal News Society, whose numbers would be pure speculation.

In entirely unrelated news, Rebel's David Menzies has apparently been instructed to go out and get himself arrested again, for the sake of another desperate fundraiser.

P.S. I have been advised that Ezra/Rebel will be appealing both smackdowns, which opens up the possibility that Ezra will end up owing substantially more since the anti-SLAPP costs structure applies to appeals as well.

Feel free to do the math.

RUMOURS ... It's worth mentioning that there are (as of yet) unsubstantiated rumours that white supremacy memorabilia enthusiast Keean "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" Bexte bailed on Rebel News because he saw all this money coming in and thought he deserved a larger slice of the pie, only to watch truckloads of all that dosh go (quite legally, apparently) to Ezra and his perpetual legal fees and judgments.

That seems to be a pattern, as Frank Magazine reported back in early 2017 how Rebel Media co-founder Brian Lilley might have jumped ship for the same reason:

In any event, given the amount of carefully-crafted fine print one finds all over Rebel News, it's likely that all of this is perfectly legal; on the other hand, one would certainly understand the quiet grumbling from the pixel-stained wretches toiling away at Der Rebel who watch hundreds of thousands of dollars rolling in month after month, and wondering when they're going to get their share.

While I'll have far more to say about Rebel News' sketchy "Fight The Fines" fundraising campaign, I am absolutely fascinated by this recent admission by Rebel Obergruppenfuhrer Ezra Levant:

That would be Ezra, openly admitting that donations to Der Rebel are not eligible for charitable tax receipts, and here's why that is so entertaining.

Those with long memories might recall that Ezra sued me for defamation back in 2016 for talking smack about his Fort McMurray fundraiser, and a fundamental plank in Ezra's complaint was that it was defamatory for me to claim that, as neither Ezra nor Rebel Media was a registered charity under CRA guildelines, donors to his fundraiser were not going to get tax receipts as, quite simply, they were not eligible. I did not think this was in any way a remarkable statement, as it was simple CRA regulations; Ezra, on the other hand, howled that my stating that was clearly defamatory, and malicious to boot.

Fast forward to 2021, wherein we find Ezra now openly admitting that I was, in fact, entirely accurate and that Rebel News is not qualified to give out charitable tax receipts.

It is going to be an interesting trial.
