Polish Joke.

We know that US diplomacy is about as weak and idiotic as it's ever been. But even the morons at the State Department couldn't be so stupid as to antagonize Russia over the mess in Georgia, could they?

Oh.

Well, it's just a US-sponsored military buildup in Poland -- who's gonna stop 'em? You? You and what army?

Oh. The Russian army.

That's a good army.

Ten years ago, Russia wouldn't have made these threats. Since then, not only has Russia built its own strength and credibility, while the USA has been busy squandering its own and selling it off to China wholesale. And when their response to a crisis is to up the ante in such a way that the other side can't help but respond in kind, things start to look a little grim.

It would be almost funny, the Americans and their "who, me?" attitude, when they (ostensibly, to be sure) invaded Iraq over Saddam's imaginary capability to attack the USA. If it didn't show signs of a returning cold war, why, it would be downright hilarious. Especially the part where the US military, weakened by two pointless, unending, and losing wars, thinks it's going to threaten anyone these days.

I can't wait till the adults are in charge again.

I guess that it's at this point, the IdiotInChief steps up to the plate and says, "Bring 'em on!"

At least during the Cold War, the threat was on such an existential, catastrophic level that most of us felt no one in their right mind would tempt fate so cavalierly. With this build up of conventional weaponry, the likelihood of real war is much greater.

I can't wait till the adults are in charge again.

I don't think there are any adults left.

Russia invades Georgia, and we mustn't antagonize them over it? Mustn't hurt their delicate feelings? Mustn't do anything that would offend?

I suspect that Georgia, one of the more liberal and democratic countries to emerge out of the Soviet break-up, is feeling a bit offended these days.

I was listening to the CBC radio news this afternoon, and heard a national newscaster quoting Dubya scolding Russia for bullying and telling them that in the 21st century nations did not invade nations.

I sympathize, and the announcer certainly sympathizes, with the Georgians -- but she could barely restrain her urge to laugh at this exhibition of Dubya's opaque cluelessness.

What the HELL does it take to convince people that GWB is plain f****** NUTS?

It's funny, yeah -- but only until you remember, lame duck or not, the pre-Alz prez has his hand somewhere near the Button...lessee, I'm sure it was here somewhere...let's check in the fridge...

Oh great...Talking Points Teresa has arrived...

I bet until a few days ago, ol' Lagomorph brain here didn't even know where the Republic of Georgia was.

We didn't antagonize Georgia, when they invaded South Ossetia.

Mustn't hurt their delicate feelings?
Fuck off, you passive aggressive cretin. If your delicate feelings aren't hurt by being told to fuck off.

Mustn't do anything that would offend?
Whoever said that? Oh yes, you did. You offend all the time, why would you not want anyone else to offend?

I suspect that Georgia, one of the more liberal and democratic countries to emerge out of the Soviet break-up, is feeling a bit offended these days.
Yes, they invade a neighbouring area, and some bigger country opposes them.

Please pay attention to the talking point memos in the future. The current view at Sun is that Georgia attacked first and Putin snookered them into it.

Russia has reasonable cause to be worried by the encroachment of American materiel on their borders. I don't think that nothing should be done about it, but the Americans have so little credibility and reliability on the world stage, to try to rattle sabres like this is going to provoke a response that they just can't handle.

So, Rabbit, here's a little thought experiment for you. Are you willing to go to war with Russia -- and I mean you, personally, because Poland is a NATO nation and Canada is required to defend them -- if Russia strikes them over the American weapons? Is this something you're sure you want? Wouldn't containing the problem and working for a solution there be a lot saner?

Quite remarkable. The CC site is now an apologist for Russia. Well, I guess any enemy of the U.S. is a friend.

And m, Russia has little to fear from Poland, with or without U.S. equipment. Regrettably Poland has much to fear from Russia.

Dear rabbit:

Are you an idiot, or just stupid? Seriously.
