January, 2007:
"To establish its authority, the Iraqi government plans to take responsibility for security in all of Iraq's provinces by November [2007]."
October, 2007:
Karbala will become only the eighth of Iraq’s 18 provinces to revert to Iraqi control, despite U.S. President George W. Bush’s prediction in January that the Iraqi government would have responsibility for security in all of the provinces by November.
January, 2008:
A big part of the president's speech a year ago focused on Iraqis taking control of their streets and taking over more responsibility.
"… to establish its authority, the Iraqi government plans to take responsibility for security in all of Iraq's provinces by November," Bush said.
By year's end, Iraq controlled just nine of the country's 18 provinces.
May, 2008:
The general said, however, that U.S. forces would not be able to turn over full control of the country to Iraqi security forces by year's end [2008], as had previously been hoped. Of Iraq's 18 provinces, nine are now under the control of Iraqi security forces. Petraeus said he expects that U.S. forces will turn over control of two other provinces to Iraqi forces this summer and do the same for additional provinces this fall, "while still others will be undoubtedly in the 2009 time frame."
And how exactly does one interpret this constant redefinition of success and relentless shifting of goalposts? Whoo hoo!
A lot has been said as to why the MSM is avoiding Iraq news like the plague, but one thing is for certain; almost every single journalist has their precious little face smeared with egg. After forging one of the most concerted efforts in the history of the free world to undermine a war effort, the leftist press has failed...
The irony is, as has always been the case with the left, that no matter how often or wrong it is, it forges on without skipping a beat. This time though, we can chalk one up for the good guys.
I refuse to waste a good punchline on this. Seriously.
