And in other news ...

The predictable perky optimism:

Canada's top soldier upbeat about security in Afghanistan

Gen. Walter Natynczyk, Canada's new chief of defence staff, has ended a five-day visit to Afghanistan, where he offered an optimistic assessment of the security situation, despite the annual summer surge in attacks by insurgents...

On Saturday, he told reporters there are encouraging signs in the battle against Taliban insurgents, which he said have "no rulebook" and "no value on human life.

And there's that pesky reality:

Attack on U.S. base in Afghanistan kills 9 troops

KABUL, Afghanistan - A multi-pronged assault by more than 100 militants on a remote U.S. base close to the Pakistan border killed nine American soldiers and wounded 15 Sunday in the deadliest attack on U.S. forces in Afghanistan in three years, officials said.

It's nice to see that Canada's new CDS is just as much of a weaselly, political hack as Canada's old CDS. Good job, Walter ... you are serving your political masters well.
