From the movie Rising Sun, Sean Connery gives Wesley Snipes a snappy lesson in accountability:
The Japanese have a saying, "Fix the problem, not the blame." Find out what's fucked up and fix it. Nobody gets blamed. We're always after who fucked up. Their way is better.
So we could fix the Afghan detainee problem. Or, well, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this.

I really don't get why people (in this context "people" is a word that means "fuckwits who can't imagine how a person can be self critical, capabable of interspection and be opposed to one political party without automatically being a slavish lover of another")think that "AHA! THE LIBERALS KNEW AS WELL!" is a defence.
I don't care who knew. I don't care which leaders go to jail, I don't care which MPs get biffed about the head and neck, drummed out of office and put on trial.
IT IS WRONG TO TRANSFER PRISIONERS IF THERE IS GOING TO BE TORTURE.
Not a defence so much as a deflection."LOOK, TEH LIBERALS! OVER THERE, BACK IN TIME!"
Whatever blame gets passed around, the fact remains that, like Somalia, the institutions involved failed to adhere to existing laws and procedures for treating prisoners. It wasn't a failure of protocol, it was complete ignorance of it because they picked expediency and spin over clarity. A glaring lack of leadership; fucking yes-men all around.
But if they accuse the Liberals of being complicit in the scandal, wouldn't they call a public inquiry to find out how much Chretien and Martin knew about it?
That would be awesome. I mean, seriously, everyone who was at fault actually getting blamed? WOO!
As far as I know the Japanese have no such saying and as far fixing things and not blaming people...well, lets just say Rising Sun isn't just fiction, it's fantasy.
2010, Pat, they do something about it. Which is still only ink on paper, and the prisoners still end up in the Afghan prison system, which likely needs rebuilding from the ground up, not periodic Canadian inspection. Nor does the agreement negate everything that has happened until now.
Also, this - I really don't get why people (in this context "people" is a word that means "fuckwits who can't imagine how a person can be self critical, capabable of interspection and be opposed to one political party without automatically being a slavish lover of another")think that "AHA! THE LIBERALS KNEW AS WELL!" is a defence.
does not equal this:
People like yourself and Day were more than willing to make this all about the blame when you thought you could simply make this about blaming the Conservatives. Now that's obvious that you can't, suddenly it's about something other than blame. I wonder if you can understand why before your posts get erased.
Patrick. The "Afghan state" is an entity that the West constructed and is comprised largely of the side the West preferred in the Afghan civil war. We are not bound to support what they do if it violates the laws that we are party to. End of story.
Patsy did you really just type "Just another thing that you didn't get in your long, sad history of not getting it" without reflecting for a moment?
Holy fucking projection Batman! Truly, irony must be dead.
Sorry, kids, I just now noticed Twatsy Ross had stopped by to call everyone else an idiot and pimp his blog. He's gone now, but I'm sure he'll be back. Like cold sores.
Twatsy Ross had stopped by to call everyone else an idiot
Ohh the irony...
What next, spelling lessons from dr roy?
Rev, I realize it was just a movie, but I liked that particular sentiment.
As do I, I just didn't want people thinking I was living in some kind of wonderland over here. To be honest though, people in public life who screw up don't ususally have to be put through a parliamentary committee. Once the shit hits the fan and they realize there is no way out of it, they are usually tripping over each other to confess their sins and make a big public apology, especially in the business world. Assuming of course that it doesn't relate to the war or whaling that is.
