Meet the new control freak, same as the old control freak.

OTTAWA -- The former head of a federal inquiry into the sponsorship scandal is telling MPs there is a dangerous and growing concentration of power in the Prime Minister's Office.

That sounds vaguely familiar ... think, think, think ... oh, right:

Bush power struggle with Congress poses messy constitutional, political issues, expert says

Republicans weigh opposition as Bush takes 'strongest ever' position on executive privilege

July 27, 2007 -- By claiming far-reaching and unprecedented executive privilege in its power struggles with the U.S. Congress, the Bush White House has roiled the political waters, forcing both Democrats and Republicans to weigh near-term political consequences of their response against a real and tangible threat to the long-term constitutional powers of Congress, suggests a congressional expert from Washington University in St. Louis.

"The White House is articulating the strongest position on executive privilege ever taken by a president, " says Steven S. Smith, the Kate M. Gregg Professor of Social Sciences in Arts & Sciences.

Like mentor, like acolyte, I suppose. When you finally hear that Stephen Harper has taken to clearing brush at 24 Sussex Drive, you'll know the transformation is complete.

I really wish the Conservatives had carried through on their promises of delivering “accountability” and “transparency” instead of just perpetuating more of the same old bullshit that many found obnoxious about the Liberal “virtual dictatorships” of the past.

As for Bush… By any measure he and Cheney should be impeached. There’s really no question about this from a strictly constitutional standpoint. If a Democrat is elected to that office this year, the Republicans can just STFU when it comes to the unconstitutional exercise of executive power that might occur because they allowed that authority to be transferred without any whimper of dissent.

Oh that won't be neccessary. Bush isn't going anywhere. Just look at our Continuity of Government plans. All the Pres needs to do is declare a state of Emergency and the whole constitutional government folds under his command as a form of 'cooperation'. Unfortunately nobody but him has the power to say when an emergency is over.

So I suspect in late October of this year we'll see some town in Massachusetts get nuked. Dubya, aka El Presidente will essentially suspend the Constitution and somehow it'll be blamed on Canada and we'll come bring some democracy up your way.
