Brace yourself ... it's going to be an exciting news day.

In breaking news, conservatives everywhere took time off from minimizing a teen-stalking Republican pedophile to point out in no uncertain terms that a Democrat involved in prostitution is completely unfit for office.

In other news, it's still not clear if pastors involved with meth and gay sex should be sat down for a stern talking to.

UMMMMMMM ... OK, I'm a bit baffled. The blaring headline at CNN reads, "Gov. Spitzer tells advisers he was involved in prostitution ring." My first reaction to that was, "Holy shit, the governor of New York was running a stable of hookers!"

But other news clips are not quite so dramatic, and suggest that he only purchased the services of prostitutes, which is still entirely unacceptable and grounds for immediate resignation, but it's not quite the same as the impression you get from being told that he was "involved" in a "prostitution ring."

At times like this, it behooves one to choose his or her words carefully, wouldn't you say, Raphael?

Is prostitution illegal where this occurred?

As far as I'm concerned, all things being equal, these kinds of issues are only relevant to a politician's spouse and family and only of interest to the public in light of the politician's record of demonstrated hypocrisy.

For anyone else, that might be the case, but it won't wash with Spitzer. He was elected as a straight arrow, squeaky clean kind of guy, so hanging out with hookers would be pretty much the end of his political career.

In other words, given his long-time reputation, this would be hypocrisy of the highest order.

No, no, no! It's completely different!

You see, they have trained spies posing as prostitutes, and they could be obtaining state secrets from the Governor.

It's not like those other cases, I mean there would not be time to train a teenage boy, so he could sweet talk those big strong wide stancers into giving away any state secrets.

Well, that's what I meant by hypocrisy. I want to maintain these distinctions, so we all don't go down the path of sniffing around our politician's panty drawers. First of all, there are many things I don't want to know and the fear of exposure of personal details unrelated to public service is what keeps many talented people (particularly women) hesitant about running for office.
