It's not just that they lie, it's that they *love* lying. Love it, love it, love it. The near total absence of accountability in the last decade has made it even that much more rewarding for them. It must be a singularly liberating experience to know you can lie about anything and not only get away with it, but actually prosper in that fashion.
It reminds me of something John Dean admitted a couple of years ago with respect to his tenure with the Nixon administration. To paraphrase: He honestly believed, at the time, that *that's* how the game in the big leagues is played. Follow that up with the unnamed official in the Bush administration who asserted that the agents of history "create" reality (which you do by lying) and the rest of us are relegated to simply studying what they do and you get an understanding of how entrenched that really is among our ruling elites. And a sense of what we're all up against.
It's frightening or at best surreal when you choose to think about it, which is why most people don't. Not for very long, anyway.
It's enough to drive you batty... How do you confront this 'alternate reality' such that people will actually listen and/or care enough to change it? When others muddy the waters so much that the average joe can't put the effort in to discern what the truth actually is, it really doesn't matter what the truth is anymore, does it?
When George W. Bush says, or permits his immediate underlings to say, that he has classified intelligence that proves that Sadam Hussein has the atom bomb and is planning to use it on the United States, that is a lie.
When Jason Kenney says politics had nothing to do with keeping George Galloway out of Canada, I suppose it's technically untrue, but it's not really a "lie" because everyone, except those who deliberately deceive themselves, knew George Galloway was kept out of Canada for political reasons.
"...How do you confront this 'alternate reality'..."
By rubbing their noses in real reality.
Like pointing out that flying to meetings is not the best way to do business, when you can crash from ash. If the Iceland volcanoes keep erupting for two years, as in the past, many people will have to change their travel behaviour.
We cannot order reality to meet our specifications.
Take for instance what just happened in NAFTA's Middle Kingdom. No way Progressive Conservatives down there are even going to let those liberals even talk about financial reforms, which would just bring even more European Socialism into the said Middle Kingdom. That's what the Leader of the PC's down there said as recently as yesterday. Had 41 signatures, he said. Democrats didn't even have no Plan B for what they're gonna do when the Republicans filibuster. http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/2010/04/who_coulda_seen_that_coming_1.php Turns out, none of them liberals ever believed all 41 of them would march off the cliff. http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/04/why-the-gop-suddenly-let-up-on-financial-reform.php?ref=fpblg It's not a lie unless you can atually fool folks.

Fuck off, DM.
It's something about their strict Christian upbringing. It promotes lying. They don't know any better.
