The New Politically Correct

Dishonest smear merchant, testy bastard and all around control freak, Stephen Harper has given down his word from on high that Israel shall be inviolate and immune from criticism. Let it be known that Israel can do no wrong, so sayeth Stephen Harper, so sayeth the New Government of New Canada, because the one is the same as the other. Welcome to the New Government's New Political Correctness.

"I guess my fear is what I see happening in some circles is (an) anti-Israeli sentiment, really just as a thinly disguised veil for good old-fashioned anti-Semitism, which I think is completely unacceptable," Harper said in an interview with CJAD radio.
"We learned in the Second World War that those who would hate and destroy the Jewish people would ultimately hate and destroy the rest of us as well, and the same holds today."

Oppose the measured response at your own risk, you fucking Nazi bastards. Saint Steve (patron saint of s'mores) has cast himself in the role of defender of the beleaguered little state that could. That could annex the neighbour's lands, could displace thousands, could settle those stolen lands and mete out collective punishment against civilian populations. The little proxy state that could act as the agent of North American interests in the region, bolstered by enormous sums of money and military hardware.

Harper was criticized in some circles for being pro-Israel when he defended controversial military strikes in Beirut.
"Canada, under this government, is never going to cater to that kind of opinion," Harper said.
"I am disturbed that there are some elements in our political system, there are even some members of Parliament ... that were willing to cater to that kind of opinion."

Oh. Oh, really! Israel's barbaric over reaction to the Hezbollah in Lebanon was what fat Steve liked to call "measured". That is despite the civilian casualties, the ruin of infrastructure and the ecological damage caused by bombing fuel and oil depots along the coast. And that is to say nothing of the peril that Israel placed many Canadian citizens and other foreign nationals in with their measured response, measured like the blitz. But now there is a very important question on the table, a question that absolutely demands an answer.

If Mr Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, is aware of Members of Parliament, who he is comfortable characterizing as anti-semites and equating them with Nazis, we must know their names. As a nation, we deserve to know who these villains are so that they might be removed from office. To protect those individuals and keep their fifth column activities to himself is to act in league with them. Name these traitors to all that we fought for and hold dear, that is your duty Mr Prime Minister. To do less is to conspire by silence.

Put up or shut the fuck up Steve. And for the record, just as one can support the troops while deploring the mission to which the civilian government has them assigned, one can indeed criticize the policies and actions of the Israeli government while supporting the existence of that nation, cherishing her people and marveling at their positive accomplishments.

But it's so much easier to smear that way and accuse some of being anti-Semite.

There is something quite irrational about Pro-Israel forces even inside the Liberal party. Israel right or wrong is always right.

Once Canada had some semblance of neutrality, now it's follow the American and Israel lobby line.

You know, if "the other side" had used illegal cluster bombs, they would have been branded as animals. In Israel's case, it glossed over.

Israel claim to be a democracy, but effectively is an apartheid state.

Using Harper's logic, this mean all criticism of China = racism.

I guess Harper should automatically shut-up about Tibet.

I suspect, with the clock running out on "Gettin' yer Armageddon On!" (7 to 9 months), we'll be hearing quite a bit of this; unless someone confronts Harper effectively and gets him to clarify or retract (and since he never speaks in a venue where that'll ever happen, we can kiss that prospect good-bye), we'll just have to get used to it.

I wish I had a Conservative MP to complain to directly as a constituent, as that, and terse letters to the editor, are the only options regular people are left with. But then, I'm not even sure if the Conservatards are even answering their phones anymore.

Bob Rae:
"I just think it's grossly unfair and I also don't think it's fair to say that everybody who has concerns about Israeli foreign policy is anti-Semitic. If that were true, three-quarters of the population of Israel would be anti-Semitic by the prime minister's definition."

Every MP should sue Harper for libel.

Beat me to it, mikmik.

Its official: the word 'antisemitic' has now lost all meaning and is totally diluted.

Ironic that the same folks who are claiming 'some members' of the HoC are really 'antisemitic' because the oppose Israeli policies vis a vis the Palestinians are the same folks supporting neo-Nazis like Mark Lemire and the drool brigade from FD, calling them the heroes of free speech.

I guess free speech is only applies to speech you agree with eh?

Strange how we are told that the Taliban watch all our newscasts and are so emboldened by the fact we debate issues, yet it is nearly impossible ever to hear the very real dissent among Israelis about how their government conducts itself.

Than main strategic objective of the war was met in the first hour. In that time, they destroyed the Iranian supplied long range missiles that could hit Tel-Aviv. The rest was overkill. There have been repercussions of this war continuing after the primary strategic goal was met, yet we hear little of it.
