Death of Palestinian girl, 8, ignites debate
BEIT LAHIYA, GAZA STRIP -- Saffiyeh Ghaben was baking bread for her family when her life exploded.
As one Israeli artillery shell after another landed too close to her house for comfort on Monday afternoon, the pregnant 38-year-old abandoned the mud-brick bread oven in her front yard and hurried her seven children inside. Seconds later, another shell crashed into the sitting room of the family's tiny home, knocking down three of the room's four walls and almost disintegrating the television set that once stood in the corner.
The human damage was far more dramatic: The blast killed Ms. Ghaben's 8½-year old daughter Hadil and left her 15-year-old daughter Tahrir blinded, likely for life. Her young son was hit in the back by shrapnel, and may be paralyzed. The other children all lie in hospital, several with disfiguring injuries. Ms. Ghaben herself was seriously injured; her unborn baby's life hangs in the balance.
"My whole family is in hospital," Mohammed Ghaben, the father, said yesterday, his voice flat and drained of emotion. "If I'd been here, I would be injured or dead, too."
So ... to recap, over the years, the Palestinians have been squeezed onto less and less land, the most arable of it being "annexed" by Israel; they've been cordoned off behind the security fence, with many of their valuable olive groves being removed (and quietly being sold off to Jewish citizens) to make space for that fence; they're harassed at checkpoints; Israel recently announced that they would no longer transfer to the Palestinian government tax revenue it legally owes the Palestinians; and Canada and other countries have just cut off foreign aid, driving the Palestinians even further into increasing unemployment and poverty. And now Israel is simply lobbing bombs indiscriminately into populated areas and killing 8-year-old girls.
Yes, I can see how all of that is part of a program to reduce global terrorism. It's all clear to me now.

Well, you see, because a small number of Palestinian militants kill Israeli civilians, that means that all Palestinians are guilty. If the Palestinians wanted peace, then they would kill the militants themselves, but since they won't do that, they are guilty of harboring them.
Besides, there are plenty of other Arab countries the Palestinians could move to, after all, an Arab is an Arab is an Arab, right?
If they have a problem with the Israelis taking the land, they can discuss it with G*d, because, after all, it's right there in the Torah - God said this land belongs to the Israelites.
...Ugh. (I don't really feel that way, just thought I'd get the discussion going.)

Those kids could've grown up and became terrorists.
It was a terrible but unavoidable tragedy. Who would've thought that lobbing artillery shells into populated areas might kill innocents?
*Sigh*
I would like to know what the cutting of funds to the Palestinians is supposed to accomplish? Make them even more desparate? Maybe if they all starve to death or are otherwise ethnically cleansed by Israel the problem will be solved. That seems to be the plan.
