We got carrots and we got sticks. OK, we got carrots.


Josh Marshall makes a notable point regarding North Korea:

Talking tough is great if you can make it stick and back it up; it is always and necessarily cleaner and less compromising than sitting down and dealing with bad actors. Talking tough and then folding your cards doesn't just show weakness it invites contempt. And that is what we have here.

Um, yeah ... showing weakness. Now who around here might have made that kind of observation once upon a time?

Marshall writes that Bush policy in the early years of his term was not to do what Clinton did. This is actually an example of Bush policy that is ahead of its time. So far it has worked disastrously -- but doing the opposite of your predecessor should work well for the next President
