Bravo, Madam Speaker.
Dear Nancy Pelosi:
Congratulations on the successful and historic passage of the health care bill. The fact that you sold out every other woman in America to get it done is, of course, completely irrelevant.
What a bright, shining moment for the Democratic Party.
Yours in endless contempt,
LuLu

I wonder if Hillary would have let the tail wag the dog like that...
better to get nothing at all.

Oh, I dunno - American women need to know where they stand in terms of their human rights. Now they do.
"American women need to know where they stand in terms of their human rights. Now they do."
yep, exactly where they stood yesterday.
KEvron
What a douche.
yep, exactly where they stood yesterday.
And two decades ago.
Don't take on a "liberal" American, sooey. They're all Captain America, deep down.
i've even got little red boots.
KEvron
seriously,, though: we don't have the luxury of an all-or-nothing propostion in the matter. wars are fought one battle at a time; you win the battle at hand, then you fight the next.
KEvron, pragmatist
Women will always have to fight for our human rights. That's just the way it is. Men are the weaker sex. They always have to have their needs met first by government.
"They always have to have their needs met first by government."
that explains the "male abortion" provision in the bill....
KEvron
Any and all provisions about abortion are for men.
then it must be gratifying for you to know there are none in the bill.
KEvron
Way to go, sooey. You could have informed Captain America here that Canada passed the equivalent of the ERA in 1982, but instead, you figured the penis and the vagina were more important.
*bleah*
"Canada passed the equivalent of the ERA in 1982"
era? what's that?
KEvron
era? what's that?
Equal Rights Amendment.
Our constitution declares everyone (including women, of course) equal before the law, but importantly, declares everyone subject to equal benefit from the law.
That was part of the argument in favour of same sex marriage. A law favouring a class of people (heterosexuals) was considered unconstitutional.
"equal benefit from the law"? what's that?
i wonder if nancy pelosi would be willing to trade her penis for my vagina? if i had a vagina, of course, and she had a penis....
funny how some of canada's liberals have the same black-and-white mentality as our american conservatives.
ALan ALda
....and i know you're too drunk right now to care, ti-guy, but i've been an era supporter since i was a pre-teen. that predates your passage.
KEvron
"A law favouring a class of people (heterosexuals) was considered unconstitutional."
will wonders never cease?!
KEvron
Lighten up, Captain America.
Could you two settle down? The rushing sound from your pissing contest is drowning out everything else.
The penis? I clearly said the vagina was more important.
Gawd, the penis? What a joke.
The rushing sound from your pissing contest is drowning out everything else.
Sorry. I just really hate Congress. The American one, that is. Not "congress," per se.
seriously,, though: we don't have the luxury of an all-or-nothing propostion in the matter. wars are fought one battle at a time; you win the battle at hand, then you fight the next.
Agreed. I don't understand all the rage that "it's not good enough", and "they should have said forget the whole thing" as if it is some huge failure. When here we have a government that has turned "incrementalism" into a fine art and we all understand they'll take each small victory they can and keep working to get everything they want.
To claim that not covering a $400 operation for a million people a year is more important than denying 50 million people safety from being ruined for life by a $100,000 operation is shortsighted at best.
Getting the "public option" off the ground is a sea change for the US, especially given the brokering system in place for legislation. Fine tuning what is covered and what is not is relatively normal ongoing tweaking. In Ontario, they "de-listed" eye exams and circumcisions a few years ago. And dental care (except life threatening situations) has never been covered by OHIP.
I suspect abortions and contraception will become covered soon enough. I don't see how access has been lessened by the passage of the health care bill.
Incrementalism is not something I'd credit as having much success in the US. It manages to lurch back every four to eight years with a speed that is astonishing for a such a large country.
I'll believe it when I see it.
"Incrementalism is not something I'd credit as having much success in the US."
tell it to rosa parks.
KEvron
"Lighten up, Captain America."
sober up, sgt swell.
KEvron
Actually, access is THE issue. In Canada, where abortion isn't illegal, it's also often not accessible - which makes us pretty deluded about our liberalism.
