It's official: Obama is just as much of a thug.

Yeah, you can stop hoping that this administration was going to be any better than 8 years of Chimpy McChimpster:

Washington - The Obama administration, siding with the Bush White House, contended Friday that detainees in Afghanistan have no constitutional rights.

In a two-sentence court filing, the Justice Department said it agreed that detainees at Bagram Airfield cannot use U.S. courts to challenge their detention.

Well, it's been fun. 2012, anyone?

Disappointing, to say the least, but Obama still has a long way to go before he hits the depths of moral depravity that characterized the Bush/Cheney regime.

The DOJ stance would be consistent with Obama's intention to escalate American military presence in Afghanistan.

What Audrey says is true. It was nice to have to see a US Prez that did a FEW sane things and strung a few coherent sentences together without breaking a sweat; and while it's disappointing to see this low hit so soon, it's still not quite so bad as Chimpy.

Of course, that we*'ve already lowered our standards that much is kind of a bad sign, no?

Yes. It's entirely true that there are such low standards.

As someone who was never captivated by Obama, I'll now add this: The man genuinely thought there was something worthwhile on the other side of the aisle. That one could be so debased as to see value in the party of bush II, Cheney, Rumsfeld, McCain, etc., is revealing.

I think this maybe a mixture of jurisdiction and "Fuck don't we have enough other very serious crap to fix here at home" coupled with choosing which fights to pick the Republicants.

Yes it would be nice if he could fix everything all at once, but even Mr. Obama is human. I'll settle for getting out of Iraq, fixing Afghanistan, repairing the economy and repairing the DOJ and restoring democracy in the USA during his first two years.

What do you want to bet Obama changes the Presidential term to 10 years next?

Not quite that simple. In case you missed it, the constitution he's talking about is the American constitution. Personally, I'm not too comfortable with the idea that the US gets to decide what rights Afghan nationals have in Afghanistan.

Part of the problem is that the local law is not very palatable to most Canadians (or Americans).

This does not avoid the fact that it's not our country and our laws are of very limited application there.

Yeah. Not like here.
