I realize this is beating a a dead horse -- well, actually, it's more like getting a shovel out of the garage and going out to the backyard and digging up the putrifying corpse, then taking a few good whacks at it -- but the National Post's resident shrieking wingnut Father Raymond De Souza irritates me so much, I just want to feed his idiotic, Catholic whining through the woodchipper one more time.
As you might have read here recently, De Souza seems to think that the existence of same-sex marriage in Canada represents a significant curtailing of religious "liberty." To which one can justifiably respond, OK, let's enumerate precisely the ways that Canadian SSM puts a crimp in the good father's homophobic, bigoted lifestyle, shall we?
- Is De Souza or anyone else from the Catholic Church required to perform SSMs within the religious context of the Church? No.
- Is De Souza required to publicly condone SSMs? No.
- Is De Souza or anyone else from his annoying religion required to ever attend a same-sex marriage? No.
- Is De Souza required, in any way, shape or form, forced to ever associate with gays within the context of his Church? No.
- Does SSM in Canada force De Souza (or any other Catholic) to, in any way, restructure their religious freedom or, in any way, curtail their "liberty" to worship their vengeful, misogynistic, baby-killing God? No.
So what exactly has De Souza's robe in a knot? Oh, right -- the fact that, if you accept a position as a civil marriage commissioner, you're simply expected to do your freakin' job. You know, according to the actual job description.
Yes, one can certainly sympathize with De Souza's heart-rending persecution here. It's hard to imagine how he even handles the emotional trauma. By George, one suspects that, given the level of grief, he might need an altar boy or two just to put a smile back on his face.
Poor baby.

go back to vatican city, de souza!
Well, he and his ilk are also persecuted in their 'liberty' because the legality of equal marriage and all the other aspects of being a sexuality option in this country means they have to edit themselves at the pulpit or face hate crime charges.
Most of the time, I think that's what their whingeing code phrases address. They'll be unhappy with anything less than totally untouchable freedom to slag any consentual intimate act other than their version of tightly controlled heterosexuality. Their version that week anyway.
Is he our version of Donohue of the Catholic League in the US? There always seems to be a Canada-lite clone in the mix these days.
I am always a little suspicious of anyone who makes this much noise over SSM. I am even more suspicious when the noise-maker is a Catholic priest.
Man, these people have really come out of the woodwork lately, haven't they? I don't attend Church (too much ritual, the contemplative value of which I don't need) but my (liberal) parents still do. Her parish priest has not said one single word about SSM or homosexuality (who the hell goes to church on Sunday to have to even mildly contemplate other people's messy, smelly, clumsy shagging, anyway?) When the "directive" came from the Diocese that a petition supporting "traditional marriage" was to be presented in each church, the priest simply indicated "there's a petition at the back that you are invited to read after mass" and that was it.
Ah, well. These sex-obsessed virgins in dresses will never change.
Don't forget that after the "vote" on the "SSM motion" last fall, Harper left the door cracked open by saying the matter was closed ... UNLESS a crisis of rights emerges.
The wingnuts - from Coren and Landolt to De Souza are trying to make the case that there is in fact such a crisis.
"Ah, well. These sex-obsessed virgins in dresses will never change. "
I doubt they're virgins.
It's got nothing to do with religion. After all we don't hear them complaining about doctors giving the children of Jehovah's Witnesses blood transfusions. That is a clear cut case is a case of the state (rightly so in my view) overuling the religious beliefs of a child's parents.
Libel....A false publication, as in writing, print, signs, or pictures, that damages a person's reputation.

I'm no lawyer, but....
Yes, that's right..you're no lawyer....dot, dot, dot.
If you're interested in libel, though, read up on Canadian law and the issue of libel/slander. I think we have the most mystifying libel laws in the world.
Anyway, the Catholic Church doesn't sue lil' bloggers for libel. Good God, haven't they raped enough innocents already?
