Oh, Christ. Does this guy not have more important things to worry about?
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- International and U.S. soccer officials are puzzled over acting governor Richard Codey's anger that The Star-Spangled Banner was not played before a match between England and Colombia.
Codey attended the game at Giants Stadium on Tuesday and became annoyed when the U.S. anthem was not played along with those of the countries in the match, even though that is the normal protocol. He said he immediately asked game organizers why it wasn't played and was told: "Governor, we're really very sorry. The British people don't want to hear it," the Newark Star-Ledger reported yesterday.
No problem, though, it's one of those things that people get over quickly, right? Right?
"When you have two countries you host so they can play each other, and have the anthems of both countries played but decide not to play the anthem of the host country, well, that's about as absurd as it gets," Codey said yesterday. "What could they possibly be thinking?"
The governor sent letters to the chairman of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which manages the Meadowlands complex, and to Britain's ambassador to the United States.
Careful, Governor. You wouldn't want to waste any of that good-will, political capital the U.S. has built up with other countries, would you?

Can you imagine if the anthem had been played and everyone stood up and turned their backs to the field? What a statement that would have made.

Is it possible to laugh so hard you die? Truly, this quote is priceless. Instead of hiding behind the policy - anthems of respective teams played, but no others - he says "The British people don't want to hear it." Like to die. I suppose the wingnuts will go to war over this.
