Aaaaaaaawkward ...

I guess just accusing her of being a left-liberal, troop-hating Democrat isn't quite going to work, is it?

A candidate for North Carolina Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court has announced on her campaign's blog that she is leaving the Republican Party and denounced the Bush administration's policy on troop withdrawal from Iraq. Rachel Lea Hunter, a Republican and a candidate for Chief Justice, likens Bush’s administration to the “Nazis” and says that all who disagree with the administration are being branded as “traitors”.

Why does Rachel Lea Hunter hate America?

She does not hate American Fascist stormtrooper CC. She loves it and trying to save it from dumb down robot suck ups like you.

Dear Friends & Voters:
What a week it has been! I not only returned to work part-time, but there was a firestorm over my comments. What happened is that individuals whom I had never met, who are filled with hate, wrote a story about my remarks. Therein, they twisted my words and filled the story with so many half-truths and falsehoods that I am not going to recount or rebut them. They even sent an email calling for my firing or a boycott of my employer.
What I said was:
What I find disturbing is that we are criticized for nothing more than the exercise of our Constitutional rights. Those who disagree with any aspect of the administration are branded as traitors and must be silenced. I thought the previous administration was bad because of the amorality. This is far worse.
There is a famous poem about the Nazis of Germany - first they came for one group, then another, but the writer did not speak up. And then they came for him and there was no one left to speak up. The administration is acting like the Nazis. I will not be quiet. I agree with Congressman Jones that we should ask the administration the tough questions.
I made those comments during my spare time and from my home computer. My employer had nothing to do with it.
Let's say one employee at a company likes chocolate. The boss likes vanilla. Should the employee be fired? No. And neither should I just for voicing an opinion. Nor should there be a boycott of the firm. There are many fine attorneys of all political persuasions there. If you had a legal problem, would you base your decision to hire a lawyer solely on the lawyer's political views? No, you would not. They are not relevant to the legal issues at hand. So there is no reason to punish my law firm and the other attorneys who work there. My views are my own, not those of the law firm.
And I stand by my comments. I am unrepetent and unapologetic for the remarks that I made. A number of you have asked why I made those comments. Up till now, I kept my views largely focused on local, i.e. state, politics. Anything else was not really relevant. But I watched the national scene and became increasingly appalled at what I saw. Here are a few reasons why I made those comments:
(1) Person of Interest - We never heard this term prior to 2001. After September 11, 2001, someone put anthrax in a congressional building. It was a despicable act and whoever did it should be punished. Remember Dr. Steve Hatfill? He was the person who was declared to be a "person of interest." In short, the government thought he had done it but had no proof. Charges were never brought to my knowledge, but he lost a job over it. If he did it, he should be brought to justice. But if he is innocent, he does not deserve to have his life and reputation ruined. Our goverment can do that just by calling someone a person of interest.
(2) Remember Jose Padilla? He is an American citizen that is locked up in South Carolina. He is thought to have had something or other to do with the terrorists. No charges have been brought, yet the goverment is keeping him locked up. The government is similarly detaining other individuals at Guantanamo. They have not been charged with war crimes orr other crimes. How long will we keep them in prison? Indefinitely.
(3) The government declared a war on Iraq unconstitutionally. And for the first time in history, it has led a preemptive war based on misrepresentations and/or faulty intelligence as we now know.
(4) The government has dictated to the citizens of this state who would be our senators. Naive me - I thought we citizens got to choose our senators.
(5) The Patriot Act and its progeny - it allows for searches and seizures without a warrant. It allows goverment to see books you've read at the library or a bookstore. It allows for "black bag" searches of your residence.
(6) It used to be we could travel to Canada or the Caribbean without a passport. Not any more. One will soon need a passport.
(7) Silencing of its critics - Congressman Jones was not only the subject of attacks, some called for his resignation. Just like they called for me being fired. I have my own congressman and he and I might not agree. But I have never called for his resignation from office because his opinions may differ from mine. One is not going to agree 100% of the time with anyone. Howver, one should not lose a job just because of one's views.
(8) Doing away with primaries - while I was recovering at home, I overheard an officeholder on the radio. He is from another state and was asked what he thinks of someone challenging him. While he is no doubt dismayed, he gave a thinly veiled threat to the challenger. In short, you should back off or face an ugly and expensive primary. No incumbent has a claim to office. If someone thinks they can do the job better, they can run. That is why we have primaries, or so I thought.
(9) Last week, our Supreme Court decided that if your land is needed by a wealthy developer or corporation to increase the tax base, they can go to the municipality and get it if you won't sell it.
These are just some of the reasons. But if someone had described the above to me and asked me to name a government, I would have thought of a third world dictator or some regime other than the US. And yet it is our government that no longer respects property and liberty rights. Call it what you will, but it has all the hallmarks of a tyrannical government.
The efforts of the individuals in question who twisted my words backfired. I had a handful of disgruntled individuals and one, just one, person called my office. Not only did I have support from across the state, but from across the nation. It was overwhelming. There were people of all political groups who think just like I do on this issue.
I am not a traitor. Nor does any America like Democrats need therapy like Karl Rove wants you to have in his beloved Detention 1984 camps in Cuba. I love my country. I don't want any more September 11ths. However, the Republicans cannot wrap themselves in the flag and scream "traitor" and "unpatriotic" and call for a person's resignation whenever someone asks a legitimate question about the war in Iraq.
Saddam Hussein has been captured. His sons are dead. Hostilities were declared to be over in 2003. When are we going to leave? How many more Iraqis and Americans must die?
What are you Republicans so afraid of that you must silence your critics? That we might be right? That the word will get out and spread? Its too late.

Oh, dear. Apparently, someone doesn't recognize sarcasm when it walks up and hoofs them in the nads.

Pity.
