You’ve come a long way, baby.

Now be a good, little "True Woman", take those shoes off and get your noble, submissive ass into the kitchen where it belongs. This will, of course, make it easier for you to "respond humbly to the male leadership in your homes and churches".

You only wish I was kidding.

Not reading that until later... much later. Still far too early out here on the West coast for gouging my eyes out with a spoon.

I started reading it, but the nausea prevented me from finishing.

I mean, cui bono when arguing for the submission of women (or anyone for that matter)? History tells us it ain't the ones submitting, that's for sure.

Given the history of Jesus's ministry to women, I don't think it's theologically correct either, but that's never stopped the Fundagelicals.

Someone should tell them that "islam" is the Arabic word for submission.

Primal truth from one of the men quoted in the article as he lectures the faithfully submissive. “A woman on her knees sways more in this nation than a thousand three-piece suited Wall Street jerks."

Given what these women are supposed to swallow for the sake of their fragile men, I guess the position is about right.

I remember the first time I read this...about 20 years ago when it was still a piece of fiction called "The Handmaid's Tale".

Can we just stop respecting religion now please, especially Christianity?

Well, sure. Why do you think that The Handmaid's Tale is such a frequent target of the Christianist would-be censors? It reveals all their secret plans for 'Murka!

Ding ding ding! It's not.

What of Mary and Martha? Martha wanted Mary to help her in jobs of hospitality, but Mary sat at Jesus's feet and learned the lessons. Now, remember that Jesus was called Rabbi. His teachings would not have been for women had he not been a tad revolutionary. But Jesus told Martha that Mary had chosen the better tasks, and that it would not be taken from her. (Luke 10:38-42) So Jesus himself said that she didn't have to be subservient, but that she should learn with the men.

Mike: Christianity isn't the problem. It's some of the people who follow it. :)

I'm trying REALLY hard to be one of those who isn't one of "those people". :)

I'm a feminist Christian (and a socialist, to boot - see my blog if that happens to interest you [/shameless self-plug]). My church has no issues with that, and we're the biggest protestant denomination in Canada. Unfortunately, we're not nearly as loud as the wingnuts who would twist the message for hate.

Why are they out proclaiming their submission? I thought the whole point was for them to stay in the house and be submissive. Gawd. Idiots. They can't even be submissive right.

+1 sooey.

They're fighting for the power that comes with being submissive. Does EVERYTHING with these people have to breed cognitive dissonance?

Oh sooey, I'm sure their husbands gave them permission to talk. *barf* If they didn't, I'm sure they'll get a non-sexual spanking.

Personally, I think that takes all the fun out of it, but what do I know? :)
