Canadian DMCA on Hold!

Funny what a few thousand calls and letters can do. According to Michael Geist the Cons are going to delay the tabling of the DMCA style bill that was going to drop tomorrow (Tuesday). If that's the case, congratulations my friends. Participatory democracy 1, Sneaky Buggers 0.

Good. Now let's see whether they'll set up a public consultation process that should have been undertaken in the first place.

Yes! Congratulations all 'round.
But, don't go home yet. I don't think the game is over.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see them try again when the storm of protest dies down. They really are sneaky authoritarian buggers who don't care for the opinion of the lower orders.
Keep the pressure on.

chris you are so right. in the next few days i'll be posting some new letters to mps and i will continue to harangue our readers to stay engaged with this issue. you can be absolutely certain that the giant media lobby and the greedy cartels are going to be keeping the pressure on and we have to match their energy, if not their funding. honest angry fighters can beat paid punchers, we've proven it before and we prove it again.

this fight isn't over but the opponent has been knocked down and is reeling. they'll keep coming and we'll keep standing our ground.

While this is good news of a sort, it wont do for the govt to just avoid this. An equitable and somehow monetization system for usage of copyrighted materials needs to be found and put in place sooner than later. THe status quo is just going to continue to undermine more and more creators ability to be able to make a fair return on work that finds it's way into popular usage.

RT: I agree - hearings where all stakeholders can make their case would be well worth it.
