The new right-wing defamation defense: "We're such liars, no one should take us seriously."

It's a little ironic that Rebel News' Obergruppenfuhrer Ezra Levant is pimping out an evening with fellow white nationalist Tucker Carlson:

since the two of those yobs have the most interesting thing in common, and that would be the new right-wing defamation defense, which can be summarized as, "I have so little credibility that no one with a functioning brain stem should take me seriously."

Here's the crux of Carlson's (successful) defense from a while back:

In short, reasonable people should already understand that Carlson is a pathological liar.

More recently, QAnon/Trumpist dingbat Sidney Powell tried the same stunt related to being sued for $1.3 billion by Dominion Voting Systems for claiming that that company helped overturn the recent U.S. presidential election in favour of Joe Biden:

Shorter Sidney Powell: "No sane person would have taken me seriously." And to round out this triumvirate of bloviating, perpetual prevaricators, there's Ezra, once trying to fend off a defamation action from Khurrum Awan by arguing ... well, let's let the words speak for themselves, shall we?

The new conservative defense: "I'm such an established liar, you can't hold anything I say against me."

I'm sure Ezra and Tucker will get along fine.

It raises the larger point about whether the court's assumptions are valid. I don't think they are. There are a large number of viewers who do take what these people say very seriously, believe it and act on it. Otherwise something like Q-Anon or ivermectin for covid wouldn't be as firmly entrenched as it is.

Anon: It's worth noting that while that "I'm such a dishonest twonk that no one takes me seriously" defense worked for Carlson, it was given very little consideration in Ezra's case, and all of the evidence suggests it's not going to work for Powell.

It is interesting, though, that that defense is even being tried.
