Dear Liberal Party Fucktards

As I scan through the centre/left/progressive type blogs there is a general impression that Iggy the loser will ascend to the leadership of the Liberal party and that Rae the loser should simply step aside. Some are calling for Iggy's installation, as though he were some sort of kitchen appliance, foregoing the ugliness of discussion, debate or having to deal with the rabble that actually make up the party membership. Well I guess no one should be surprised that the idea of discussion and debate would be divisive, we can pretty much acknowledge that the Liberals are a pack of fractious idiots by this point. I remain convinced that Dion's squalid run as leader was not defeated merely by the Cons and their smear campaign. I have no doubt that the dismal defense and counter attack by the Grits during the last election was poor, hapless Stephane having his legs cut out from under him by his own team. And by team, I mean the disingenuous Ignatieff and his supporters.

I'm not a big fan of either Rae or Ignatieff, I don't see either as being attractive to Canadians at the voting booth. For right or wrong, Rae will forever carry the stigma of his failed run as Premiere of Ontario. And Ignatieff can waffle and offer mea culpas until his head falls off, he supported the war in Iraq and he made excuses for "coercive interrogation techniques" aka torture. Not to mention that he has all of the charisma of Bob Stanfield and hey, we already have a narcissistic neo-con asshole at the head of a political party in Canada. Anyway, back to this whole notion of trying to short circuit the leadership process so the Liberals can get back to failing against the Cons instead of just failing amongst themselves.

If there were a lick of clever in that sad and dying party, they would knock their petty heads together and have a little confab. Yes there should be a debate between the two candidates left in the running. Yes the party should make as much noise about the debate as possible, get as much media as they can drag away from the bar and go for the throat, giving no quarter. And that debate should have one and only one topic, how to damage, defeat and destroy the Stephen Harper Party. Period. Let the membership write in their votes, phone them in, go by riding polls or whatever mechanism involves the most members and pisses off the fewest. Make the damn debate a couple of hours where the two highest profile Liberals in the country get to kick the living crap out of Stephen Harper. Youtube it, blog it and let the country know that there is an alternative, that there is unity in the party when it comes to smashing Harper, exposing his lies and keeping him in check. Let them focus on dragging Harper back into the light of day, In and Out scandal, RCMP executing a warrant against the Conservative Party offices, firing public servants for partisan reasons, environmental inaction, economic incompetence... you name it. Drag each and every failing, flaw and foible out into the light of day and elect the leader that best smashes Harper's ugly ideas back into his fat face.

Is that such a difficult concept for the Liberal Party of Canada to grasp? Evidently. Why fight a common enemy when they can kick each other in the shins, idiots.

LOL.. not sure I've seen a more articulate reflection of current Liberal inadequacy, let alone from a progressive blogger..

..just a thought.. arising from a conversation on my own blog with an articulate person on the opposite side of the spectrum from my bad conservative self..

Do you ever see the potential of a new party.. a truly progressive party (not progressive as in Progressive Conservative, and not progressive as in "I'm a raving leftist but "progressive" sounds more acceptable than "socialist")?

You know.. a party of moderation that doesn't despise the idea of initiative and reward for hard work, but doesn't assume that "if it's good for business, it must be good for everyone"?

Just a thought.. would seem that, maybe there should be a place in politics for normal, thinking people, in that great middle who hate the blind dogmatic kool-aid drinking of those who check their brains at the door when they enter political office.. people who think a politician should do what's best, not just what helps them rise in the polls in the mad race for more power..

Just a stupid thought.. but you know us conservatives, always the cock-eyed optimist dreamers..

Oh.. here's irony.. your "word verification" is.. I kid you not.. "Roveness"

well roblaw, as you can tell, i'm not a party partisan. i have next to no faith that the libs can extract their collected heads from their own arses. a while back i joked that out of the ashes of the liberals a new party might arise, one that brings the bloc into the fold as part of a canadian national party, a more formal coalition of causes to the centre left. as an ontarian and a canadian, i do not see the bloc as it is presently constituted as either the devil or as a separatist party per se.

i have great affection for quebec and the people there have never treated me with anything less than kindness and hospitality. i would, in all sincerity, welcome the opportunity to vote for a bloc canada party that included honourable men and women like gilles duceppe. as it sits, i am a voter without a home, none of the current parties are worthy of my franchise.

Robert G. Harvie, Q.C. said...

..hey, I actually asked the Bloq if I could run in Alberta.. seriously.. though I have to admit it was more to illustrate the irony of federal funding where the club is "restricted"..

Hmm.. "Bloq Canada".. has a certain cynical irony actually.. you may have something..

..and as for party problems.. I'm a recovering Liberal myself.. voted for John Turner (when I lived in Quadra), supported and voted Liberal for Chretien's first term.. but finally couldn't do it anymore when they let Alan Rock loose on society.. since then, I've supported the Cons only because I thought it was a party of "less" government.. which is now a highly questionable supposition.. but, it's a funny thing, I've actually been a member of the Liberal party and the Conservative party, and at least at meetings, I find the conversation is more open at Conservative meetings.. so I plod on, trying to pull the conversation to the "sane" from the extreme..

But I agree, right now, it really sucks when you have significant difficulty with even the party you support, but can't bear to be another asshole who can't be bothered to vote..

Two thoughts:

(1) It's not like Harper wins any 'warm and wonderful human being' contests to start with.

(2) Whoever the Liberals select as a leader needs to be able to stand toe to toe with Harper and fling the mud back at him.

Whether Ignatieff or Rae can do that is an open question. I've like Ignatieff's performance in question period - and I know that he's Harper's intellectual equal - and then some.

Please learn how to spell Bloc.

..uh.. BLOc Quebecois.. hence, Bloq.. sorry, I guess this site is big on convention..

Not really. We often refer to the CPC as the NSDAP or the KKK and everyone knows what it means.

WTG Team Ignatieff. Nice bloodless coup by the Count and his supporters (or was it?). Now perhaps you can clean off the thumbscrews and use them on Harper.

@roblaw: A true Progressive Party (or maybe the Sane Party) wouldn't fly in the electorate.
Heavens forbid that there exist a party that actually represents the majority's interests and exhibits moderation.
It's partisanship that wins elections, mah boy! Bitter, polarizing, delusional partisanship!!

It's amazing, isn't it?

Sixty percent of the electorate doesn't feel the Conservatives are right for Canada. All the Liberals need to do is galvanize the electorate. Ideally by trotting out a little bit of forward-thinking, democratic-style policy, as opposed to the truculant drag rightward we've been putting up with.

And I have no confidence they're going to do it. I'd honestly have preferred Dion to either of the current candidates.

WV = "reined" As in "Harper needs to be ___ in and the Liberals are acting like a barnyard full of chickens."

Maybe we could secede to the US? I mean, once we infiltrated them completely we could change the name back. And at least it looks as though they'll have thoughtful, charismatic leadership for the next eight years.

look anarch, you are more than welcome to your conspiracy theories and dementia. elsewhere. there is plenty of room to criticize israeli policy on the basis of the actions and statements of the israeli government. there is more than plenty to criticize ignatieff for, based on his actions and statements. but you are not welcome to rant and rave your conspiracy mumbo jumbo garbage here. don't like it, tough. you have a blog that i assume someone reads. post your mindless dribble there.

Your head must be hurting from reading all that crap psa.

What a depressing turn of events. The last two weeks have shown me that the North American political thrust to dumb down citizens has worked brilliantly. I always hoped we were slightly immune in Canada but I guess that comes with the educational cutbacks territory.

yeah gabe, i'm afraid the nutjob who claims to be principled is spamming all over the blog. it is the sign of a bearer of truth apparently. i don't have authority to police threads on posts by the other authors here so if they want to leave the delusional twaddle up that's up to them.

psa - You guys ever considered haloscan? It allows IP banning.

I don't like banning people either, but sometimes it's necessary when people lose their grip and run amok through your combox.
