Right-wing media outlet that relentlessly brags about how it refuses, on principle, to accept anything from federal government currently shrieking inconsolably about not getting something from federal government:

P.S. The obvious sticking point for Rebel News is its oh-so-obvious lack of anything resembling "original content," given that 92.6 per cent of what shows up there is effectively Ezra Levant shrieking, "And here's what grinds my gears." But if you want to truly understand how thoroughly Der Rebel fails to satisfy the criteria for original news content, well, go read.
I will expound on all of this in more detail in the near future.
P.P.S. Ironically, Ezra Levant's reporting on this very development is the perfect demonstration of Rebel News' utter lack of integrity when it comes to reporting.
As you can see here, Ezra claims, "We're suing Trudeau":
Uh, no you're not. First, the application itself lists as the respondent "Canada Revenue Agency," so Ezra has already lied about who is being sued.
Ezra further lies by claiming this is a lawsuit, when it is simply an application for judicial review.
There is definitely some delightful irony in that, even as he is claiming that Rebel News is a legitimate media outlet, Ezra hideously misrepresents what's happening.
You can't make this up.

I think Trudeau's censors were being generous. When push comes to shove in court, the Rebel Commander says he's an entertainer, not a journalist. He wants the benefits of a news organization with none of the truth-telling responsibility.
I was part of a team that lobbied (successfully, I might add) for mandatory carriage of our broadcast service during the same round of CRTC hearings that declined the pitch from Ezra's old home, Sun News. He certainly had no qualms about accepting government funding then - in fact he, Peladeau and their team DEMANDED that all cable operators should be forced under their licenses to carry Sun News as a service of national importance (and pay Quebecor handsomely for the privilege, of course).
The CRTC politely declined because, as a senior advisor to the Commission told me privately after the hearings and decision, "their application was almost as bad as their programming".
Anon 8:35, I thought it was because they did not have a real over the air service. Did they shutdown channel 52 sun news after they lost their mandatory carriage or after?

Anonymous 8:49: at that point, the Commission was licensing a number of specialty services, and "broadcast" status didn't enter into the equation. Although it was ages ago, I don't think most of the applicants who were granted licenses were conceived as "broadcast" outlets (which is why the startups were hitting on the cable companies as the primary distributors).
Sun did, in fact, have a broadcast license, but were applying for renewal AND mandatory cable carriage. APTN, which got its license and mandatory status in that same round of hearings, had no broadcast service outside some Arctic hamlets that relied on ancient Television Northern Canada local broadcasting infrastructure.
