Hmmmmm, I guess America is great if you are rich. Poor, not so much. These ladies (and commenters) want Canada to be exactly like America and talk about how great America is and the rampant crime in Toronto due to jamaicans yada yada yada. Every American city I have been to is a sickening combination of the very poor and very rich. Lots of crime, rampant poverty. Poverty in Canada has nothing on this.
I guess to have a healthy middle class, a few greedy neo-cons are gonna be pissed. Suits me just fine.
These "pundits" are very good at putting words in the mouths of Canadians, especially Kay. Her statements about hating Americans are false. A majority of Canadians are against their politics and the way they run business, but we do not hate their citizens who are affected by their criminal government and overall corrupt business culture. And her comments about relgious groups...she is referring more to hate groups than religious ones ie Focus on the Family and the bigoted, loud mouthed, Christian Coalition of Canada lead by Ralph Reed's buddy, Charles McVety. Sorry Barbara, these are not religious groups dear, they are political bully pulpits.
You're absolutely right. It's my understanding that the shit that happens over here (rampant crime, gun violence, etc.), is the reason why Canadian authorities are so protective of your borders. My husband has visited Canada on several occasions on buisness and found a very different atmosphere than we have here, and a security force that is diligent, to say the least.
The Canadian low-income housing Michael Moore showed in "Bowling for Columbine" are a far cry from the drug and crime infested ratholes in American cities. The people you mentioned that want Canada to be more like the US don't have a clue what they're asking for.
It is indeed sickening. That's why I live outside the city.
I'm still trying to talk hubby into relocating to Canada, though. I love my house and the area is nice, but I personally would rather go northward.
The real problem is that Upper & Lower Canada haven't been sold on confederation and the only thing the two can agree on is that they're not American. Anti-Americanism became the official identity of Canadians by default.
But don't let this trouble you. Americans understand that Canadians have to be UnAmerican to remain united. It bothers you more than it bothers us.
Few things irritate me more, and faster, than the statement that 'Canadians are anti-American'. It's the biggest crock of sh!t I've ever heard.
What a lot of wanker pundits call "anti Americanism" is nothing more than Canadians being Canadian. Contrary to popular idiot mythology, not wanting to be American doesn't mean that one is anti-American. {which is often the false correlation drawn}
