I have an interesting book in my library, 'Killer by Joey'. It's the autobiography of a man who was a top hitter for the Mob in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

And the end he gave the usual acknowledgments for the people and institutions that got him to that spot in his life.

Among them was 'The U.S. Penal system for creating a better system for training criminals than anything we could set up. You put a kid away for a year and when he comes out he'll show you twelve ways to pick any lock in the world.'

So Harper is right. Putting kids away for a long time accomplishes a lot. Just not what he thinks it accomplishes.

If what goes on between his ears can be categorized as thinking, that is.

Actually this is a perfect Con strategy that provides a solution to youth crime and unemployment.

Prisons are the solution to the problem of rising off-shore manufacturing costs and those annoying boycotts against sweat-shops that exploit children.

In the US, many prisons and penitentiaries are run by private industry. They use convicts as slave labour.

How does it reduce crime, anyway?
