You're right -- one can criticize a book without going to the extreme of suggesting no one even read it. I think my reaction to Hensher's article was based on the current nauseating gushing over the movie.
I recall, many years ago, picking up some Lewis book in a bookstore (can't remember which one) on Christian apologetics, skimming it and thinking it was just sophomoric twaddle. Nothing I've read of his since then has changed my opinion.
If people want to read Lewis, that's fine with me. But I'm getting just a bit tired of the current fawning adulation, that's all.
