Catching up on pharmacists and "conscience clauses" and the like.

It's going to take a few days to get back up to speed on the whole "conscience clause" brouhaha related to pharmacists and religious objections and all that madness so I'll just throw this open to the general readership -- what's happening these days, particularly related to last year's Bill C-307?

And note very carefully, when you read that bill, that it relates to far more than just pharmacists and dispensing birth control pills. Look at that intro:

An Act to amend the Criminal Code to prevent health care practitioners from being coerced into taking part in medical procedures that offend the practitioner’s religion or belief that human life is inviolable

Does that cover a lot of potential ground or what? It's not hard to imagine that there all kinds of possible mischief hidden in that bill. Is this a potential election issue? Has anyone brought it up? Etc., etc... you get the idea.

Yikes! That's preamble sounds like something that could open the door to a doctor refusing to see a gay patient, a pharmacist refusing to dispense birth control, and [insert token Fundie wet dream scenario here].

If passed, I can't see it holding up against the Charter.

Oh, come on, let's not get carried away. I mean, allowing doctors to refuse to treat gays? What are the odds?

cc, I remember taking note of that story too - hard to fathom that sort of thinking getting taken seriously.
