I'm guessing the fallout from this will be fast and furious:
Detained family wins reprieve from Ottawa
A nine-year-old Canadian boy and his Iranian parents, who have been held at a secure U.S. immigration detention facility for the past month, will be returning to Canada this week.
Freedom comes in the form of a temporary resident permit granted Monday by Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Diane Finley. The Canadian and U.S. governments are in the process of arranging travel details, such as where the six-month permit will be issued and whether the family will fly directly to Toronto or to a border city like Detroit for a land crossing.
That means Kevin Yourdkhani and his parents, Majid Yourdkhani and Masomeh Alibegi, could be released from the T. Don Hutto Family Detention Center in Taylor, Tex., as early as tonight or tomorrow.
So ... having utterly ignored this story the entire time, how quickly will the Blogging Tories seize on this latest development as proof of Stephen Harper and his loyal Harpies standing up for Canadians, or something equally dishonest and opportunistic?
Place your bets. Come on ... I'll give you odds.

true story. i've been reading that as "italian" an italian family - ALL THIS TIME - and i was really stumped thinking, "i dunno... mafia, maybe..." i was picturing this italian family, sort of ala 60s, mama with sophia loren hair and papa with the open necked shirt and gold chains, little pepe with his bowl of chef boyardi. thank gawd they're iranian. it was all so weird. like a fellini movie.
Whooee! I ai't got the stomach fer sortin' through them Boogin' Tories lookin' fer them t' crow about doin' the right thing. It took 'em 34 days t' do anything. They only did anything on accounta the number o' letters an' emails they was gettin' an' the Boogin' Tories wasn't urgin' anybuddy t' write Petey Mackay or Diane Finley on behalf of any Eye-rainians.
Finley's office is callin' this a "unique case" an' I'm wonderin' just how unique it really is. Merkans make a bizness outta incarceration an' this is just another example. They got a higher percentage of their population locked up than any other country. They're jailhouse crazy an' Harpoon's talkin' the same talk with his tough on crime crappola.

this still isn't over. The family still has to get proper status in Canada to allow the parents to stay. I'm guessing that's going to mean paying some lawyers some serious cash - these thing usually do. Does anyone know if there is any sort of legal defense fund people can make donations to?
