It's only democracy when other people fuck with it.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon is terribly, terribly concerned about democracy and electoral fairness in Afghanistan.
The irony amuses me.
P.S. I await, with bated breath, Stephen Harper's pompous condemnation of the apparent military coup in Niger. 'Cuz what we really need right now is a lecture from Stephen Harper on the value of constitutional democracy and freedom. Or something else he knows nothing about.

Imposing direct rule of the prime minister is completely different from having a military coop.
Sure and that adds so much legitimacy to Harper. Serious seer do you have a brick wall in front of your eyes when you do your seeing?
cc, you know you might be on to something.
after all, wasn't it the Liberals who said that with Stephen Harper we'd have soldier with gun in our streets?
and in niger you had a democratically elected president turn tyrant .... maybe that's what Harper has in mind.
maybe that what all the money he's pouring into the military is all about. he must be planning a coup.
@BB:
Harper's already pulled off two coups. First when the democratic majority of Parliament threatened his grip on power, and then again when the Afghan Detainee Inquiry threatened his grip on power.
Who needs soldiers when you've got power to prorogue, apparently unopposed by the GG?
oh, pleuuuz Metro. hyperventilating much?
if perogying is such a point of principle, i would fully expect the Opposition to move and pass a vote of non confidence in the government.
i'm not holding my breath for that to happen though!
i guess it's not a such a major principle after all then.
A group of renegade armed soldiers stormed Niger's presidential palace Thursday afternoon in an apparent coup attempt in the West African country's capital of Niamey.
The article shows the obvious CBC left wing bias in its politically correct version of what really happened.
They just had to whitewash it as a "group" of soldiers, when we all know it was really a coalition of renegades. They're so dishonest!
Defund the CBC!!

Today is "talk like a hunter day".
As I have remarked before, the GG signed on to be assistant queen, not a martyr to the cause of Canadian democracy. If you expect the GG to show her bones, someone has to have her back. And who, in contemporary Canada, would that be?
Christ, Prime Minister & Country, I always say.
Christ, Prime Minister & Country, I always say.
Holy crap, we're only in February and that's already the stupidest thing that will be said in 2010.
@BB
Um ... No. Wasn't hyperventilating.
I notice you weren't disputing the basic fact though. Harper has decided Canada's best off without the representation we actually elected. Which mostly isn't him and his party.

Sadly, I agree with your assessment. However, I'm still faintly hopeful they might find some spine and pull the trigger as soon as the doors re-open.
