In yet another break with Canadian tradition and values, Stephen Harper and his new government are declining to act as co-sponsors of the United Nations resolution seeking a global moratorium on the death penalty. CTV.ca is carrying the Canadian Press story.
Evidently, the refusal to advocate for Canadians so sentenced abroad, is only the first step in Mr Harper's efforts to steer our nation into a new dark age where state sanctioned murder can pretend to be justice. Apparently the act of co-sponsoring the resolution would have tuckered out the New Government of New Canada.
"An official with the Foreign Affairs Department says Canada will vote in favour of the resolution when it comes to the floor of the UN General Assembly in December, but will not sponsor it.
"There are a sufficient number of co-sponsors already, and we will focus our efforts on co-sponsoring other resolutions within the UN system which are more in need of our support," said Catherine Gagnaire."
Indeed, why show leadership when there's no blood to be spilled. This wussy resolution flies in the face of the Harper vision of Canada as a rough and tough nation, ready to make war and show those other countries what we're made of. As long as he isn't at risk of course, the fighting and dying part is for easterners, poor folk and Quebecers. Besides, co-sponsoring sounds like an awful lot of work. Right?
"Canada's former ambassador to the United Nations, Paul Heinbecker, said co-sponsorship doesn't involve much effort -- a simple phone call or the raising of a hand during a meeting.
He said in the absence of a radical change in the wording of such a mainstream resolution, the decision not to co-sponsor signifies a departure for the Canadian government.
"You can only take these as signs of how the government wants to be seen," Heinbecker said."
And given that the United States would vote against such a resolution on the floor of the General Assembly, Stephen Harper's government would like to be seen as the little fat kid that hangs around, kissing up to the Bush/Cheney regime. This is a declaration of war against the values of the Canadian public. Stephen Harper has determined to remake this dominion to suit his own petty world view.
"Prime Minister Stephen Harper told reporters last Friday that his government had no intention of reopening the debate on capital punishment, although opposition critics have accused his party of revealing its true desires through the policy change."
Half a truth is as good as a whole lie. Harper really doesn't intend to re-open the debate on the death penalty. He clearly doesn't give a fuck what Canadians think, want or believe. He has decided that he and his reactionary little buddy Stockwell know what is good for us. He is remaking Canada in his own image, that of a puffy, pretentious prig with delusions of potency.

It was my first thought when I heard the story this morning: "Canada is heading into a new Dark Age." I'm so disgusted I could puke. Harper's "Neo-Conadian Government" is swiftly turning this country into a Bushco-American garbage dump.
And when I heard that they "don't intend to reopen the question of the death penalty," and realized what a lie that is (just wait till they've got a majority, by god) -- I was more convinced that they will "reopen the question of gay marriage" too, if they ever acquire complete power in this country.
Wretched, evil, nasty, vicious beasts they are.
This is the worst type of social engineering, something against which the Harpocrites railed hysterically. There is absolutely no groundswell of Canadians wanting to re-open this and other issues, but that won't deter these pigs. They'll create a crisis if they have to to get what they want.
I truly detest these people.
"The Conservative government found that just one in five Canadians supported the death penalty as a criminal deterrent in a survey it commissioned this summer in support of its justice policies."
from the Star - yesterday, I believe. if the nutcons aren't considering re-opening debate on the death penalty, why commission a poll that includes questions on the death penalty?
Bingo!
My guess is they're trying to figure out how much hysteria they'll have to drum up about it, to change the poll numbers.
Well, really, if someone else had already sponsored the resolution, then there was no need for us to do so as well, right?
Just out of interest, how many other countries were official sponsors anyway?
74 you say?
That many?
Oh.
