... and that's when reality slapped him in the face with a wet fish.

There's an old joke that a liberal is just a conservative who hasn't been mugged. Conversely, I'm guessing a conservative is just a liberal who whinges on about freeloading welfare parasites until he ends up in a bad place:

For many of us welfare is something of a burden, something that most think is taken advantage of and used to substitute work and earning a living. From a distance this could be true in a lot of cases, and indeed many do use it for that purpose. But there are cases where it is needed, and the last hope for many families, especially in these times of financial downturns. Personal experience finds me in that situation now, due to recurring problems with my back. I can no longer work and have been forced to turn to the welfare system to supplement my wife's part time income while we sort out the mess we find ourselves in.

Tune in next month when Blogging Tory Sean, after surviving on taxpayer-supplied welfare and with help from taxpayer-funded physiotherapy, is back on his feet and whinging on about lazy, shiftless welfare bums. You know it's coming.

They think their political ideology makes them the exception to the rule. They don't understand that the whole idea behind social assistance (which their government of choice is trying to destroy) is that it doesn't discriminate against them even when they would have it discriminate against others.

It's always fun to watch hard-core conservatives defend their right to social programs while demeaning and denigrating anyone else who might take advantage of exactly the same thing:

But not Sean or his right-wing fellow travellers. Because only other people take unfair and unjustified advantage of social programs. Never them. It's funny how it always works out that way, isn't it?

I'd like to see a few more of these smug, self-satisfied pricks end up on welfare. They need sobering up with a cruel dose of reality.

Anybody know if KKKathy ever found a job?

I have worked in the "welfare system" and I'd like to know the source for the assertion that many recipients use social assistance as a substitute for "work and earning a living."

At the time I worked in the system, here in Ontario, a single person with no dependents was entitled to a maximum of something in the neighbourhood of $535 per month of which a maximum of $355 was for rent. Of course, to be eligible you had to have virtually no assets and no family support available so it wasn't as if this was a readily available handout. Besides, I can't think of anyone who would consider less than $18 a day as a satisfactory substitute for work when welfare benefits per day were less than what you would earn for just over two hours of work at the golden arches.

I seriously hate these people.

This is just a great post. The cognitive dissonance Sean feels must be giving him nosebleeds. I also think I'll add this to my list of favourite quotes:

Welfare rip-off artist here!

'bin there, dun that.

Was on welfare for a year during 80's recession. Stayed on welfare for one more year to do schooling part-time. Second year (Fulltime) was financed by debt.

Regional direstor I met socially a few later called me an outstanding program success, in her books. I used the system to get out of the system. It can be done. It really helps to have it.

Good luck to Sean. Back injuries are nasty (had one of those which cost me a job, too). His job is to use the system. Lie and cheat and scheme his way off the rolls. If he does it, he will be a welfare success story. If he does not... well, appreciate my tax dollars that you receive. The ones I am earning as a result of being a former welfare rip-off artist.

I would have two bits of advice to him. Cheat. Do what it takes to feed the kids, do what you can to earn extra money. The other bit? Have a plan for the future. Talk to welfare about it and ask for any help in achieving it. That is what those tax dollars I send to the government are there for.
