So, what is the problem now? Well, according to the Globe and Mail, we are just learning that Conservative MP Shelly Glover offered to give free water bottles to Manitoba French immersion students to reward them for speaking a second language. Of course, the school board of education had to turn the offer down because — there was a Conservative logo on the bottles.

There you have it. Canada’s very own “watergate” scandal. Or, should we call it “schoolgate?” Surely, Ms. Gover [sic] should have known she couldn’t add the colour blue on the water bottles.

As I'm getting ready this morning, I feel I should do a post on the left wing "chickenhawk" argument.

The basic meaning of the argument is that those of us who are in favour of using war when necessary (not their words, mind you) shouldn't be allowed an opinion because we aren't willing to join the military ourselves. Its a ridiculous argument, made by insecure cowards who don't have it in them to join the military themselves.

The most obvious reason for the stupidity behind this argument is that it attempts to deny people the right to freedom of speech and freedom of thought. That alone should be enough to end the chickenhawk argument, but unfortunately, the left doesn't actually believe in freedom of speech and freedom of thought, so it doesn't end there.

The next reason is that it would be no different from calling someone a hypocrite for donating to injured firefighters but not being a firefighter.

No, Justin, you cementhead, that's not the analogy in play here. The analogy to being a relentless cheerleader for endless war but refusing to serve is not to refuse to be a firefighter but support people who are.

The analogy is refusing to be a firefighter while running around, perpetually lighting fires, then demanding that it's everyone else's job to put them out but you'll be happy to provide all kinds of moral support while you look for the next building to torch.

See the difference, Justin? Give it time -- it'll come to you. Or maybe not.

LuLu here: Should Justin require further edification as to why "chickenhawk" is such a wholly appropriate term for people like him, we now turn to our good friend, John "Kung Fu Monkey" Rogers.

That these unquestioning war devotees will not sacrifice their lives, their comfort, their safety: that's hardly a sin in modern society. But they are not even willing to risk emotional discomfort by admitting their faith has been misplaced. That they will not even risk this, this tiny, tiny thing ... that is the sin. It is not that that you're not risking your life. It's that you are risking nothing.

The problem is, there is no single word in English for a man risking absolutely nothing, who demands someone else risk absolutely everything. I'm sure there's a word in German -- they are a whizzer with those kicky compound nouns -- but none in English for that precise combination.

So, for now, we must let "chickenhawk" be its placeholder.

Not that long ago, Blogging Tory and young, angry raging Jew Justin Hoffer was all about the heat of actual combat:

Apparently, though, someone pointed out to raging Justin that being in the Israeli military might involve, um, actual fighting. And combat. And danger. So it's on to Plan B:

Tomorrow morning, I will begin making the necessary preparations to join the Canadian Infantry Reserves.

Excuse me? The Canadian Infantry Reserves? Wow ... that ambitious plan for a foreign military career didn't last long, did it, Justin? Lasted all of two days, as best I can tell.

And one wonders what happened to Justin's earlier philosophical position regarding the Canadian military:

I am sick of the monarchy, and will not serve in Canada's military because they swear an oath of allegiance to the crown, rather than our nation.

Join us next week when Justin announces he is enrolling in an MBA program at Western because it's what he always wanted to do. Just before he decides to fulfill his life-long dream of bicycling across Canada.

At this point, I'm guessing the Israeli military rejected Justin due to his crippling attention deficit disorder.

Because, obviously, military regulations are for other people, not Justin. I'm guessing Justin is in for a horrifically rude awakening when he learns that there are rules and, yes, he's expected to follow them as well.

Dismal Turnouts For Victory!

Well the by-elections are over and we can prepare for each of the parties to make their pitch claiming success or in the Liberal's case, nobody died. Most significant is the Con's win Quebec. By stripping the Bloc of the Montmagny, L'Islet, Kamouraska and Riviere du Loup seat they can make an argument that their fortunes in Quebec have begun to shift. The NDP took New Westminster and made gains in their percentage of the turnout in Quebec, so they will also claim success. The riding of Hochelaga was a strong Bloc victory and nowhere did the Liberals fare better than third in popular voting. The neorhino.ca party brought in 0.7% of the votes in Hochelga, besting the totals of the independent candidate and the Marxist-Leninist Party. They are a force to keep an eye on in coming months.

The Conservative win in Quebec comes on the heels of the governing Cons popping by the riding to drop one quarter of a billion dollars of taxpayer money into the local economy to widen a highway. $242 million, that is going to be one wide assed highway. Having taken the riding with 12,162 votes as of the last tally, that comes to about $19,900 per Conservative vote. That my friends, is some sweet graft, er pork... um, stimulus!

I look forward to the Liberal Party spin on these results. By-elections? There were by-elections... yawn, oh we hardly noticed. This really doesn't bode well for the official opposition considering the Harper minority government is presiding over a huge and growing deficit on the heels of a string of gaffes and scandals. I suppose we can expect Michael Ignatieff to start lining his team up for those confidence votes. Or perhaps not. Should be a fun squirm to watch.

Apparently, the RCMP possibly might have hindered in some non-specific way the potentially questionable activities of allegedly bad people who perhaps were considering doing us something remotely resembling harm (emphasis tail-waggingly added):

Hasan, the sole suspect in the massacre of 13 fellow US soldiers in Texas, attended the controversial Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Great Falls, Virginia, in 2001 at the same time as two of the September 11 terrorists, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt. His mother's funeral was held there in May that year.

The preacher at the time was Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born Yemeni scholar who was banned from addressing a meeting in London by video link in August because he is accused of supporting attacks on British troops and backing terrorist organisations.

Ohmigod, what a monster, carefully biding his time all those years, planning, plotting, deviously putting his nefarious plan into action to ... to ... um, what exactly was he doing all that time? Oh (emphasis tail-waggingly added):

Last night Hasan remained in a coma under guard at a military hospital in San Antonio, Texas, and was said to be in a "stable" condition. Born in America to a Palestinian family, Hasan, 39, was an army psychiatrist who had chosen to sign up for the US military against his parents' wishes.

But he turned into an angry critic of the wars America was waging in Iraq and Afghanistan and had tried in vain to negotiate his discharge.

Ah, the well-established terrorist tactic of trying to get as far away from the enemy as possible. Does the evil of these people know no limits?

What does seem clear is that the army missed an increasing number of red flags that Hasan was a troubled and brooding individual within its ranks.

"I was shocked but not surprised by news of Thursday's attack," said Dr Val Finnell, a fellow student on a public health course in 2007-08 who heard Hasan equate the war on terrorism to a war on Islam. Another student had warned military officials that Hasan was a "ticking time bomb" after he reportedly gave a presentation defending suicide bombers.

Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling that someone in a position of military authority has some serious 'splainin' to do.

Italian court finds CIA agents guilty of kidnapping terrorism suspect

Twenty-three Americans were tonight convicted of kidnapping by an Italian court at the end of the first trial anywhere in the world involving the CIA's "extraordinary rendition" programme for abducting terrorist suspects.

The former head of the CIA in Milan Robert Lady was given an eight-year jail sentence for his part in the seizure of Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, known as Abu Omar, who claimed that he was subsequently tortured in Egypt. Lady's superior, Jeff Castelli, the then head of the CIA in Italy, and two other Americans were acquitted on the grounds that they enjoyed diplomatic immunity.

But another 21 alleged CIA operatives and a US air force officer were each sentenced to five years in jail. All were tried in absentia and those who were convicted will be regarded as fugitives under Italian law.

And after all that, what exactly was accomplished, anyway? Oh:

According to testimony of witnesses, Omar was bundled into a van after being stopped, apparently by Italian police, on a Milan street in February 2003. The prosecution said that he was driven to the US airbase at Aviano, near Venice, and then transferred to another American military facility, at Ramstein in Germany. He was allegedly flown from there to Egypt.

Four years later he was released without charge.

As the Olympic Torch makes its way to Vancouver for the start of next year's games, there will be more torch relay ceremonies held in Conservative ridings than in the ridings of opposition members.

CTV News has obtained a list that shows that torch relay ceremonies will be held in 91 Conservative ridings, compared to 20 Liberal ridings and 17 ridings for both the NDP and Bloc Quebecois...

In Saskatchewan, all 11 Conservative MPs have a torch event taking place in their ridings, though the one Liberal MP does not.

At this point, I fully expect to hear that H1N1 vaccinations will be available only in Conservative ridings. Seriuosly, would that shock anyone?

Inner-city Toronto, the last real Liberal fortress with a smattering of New Democrats, gets one torch relay event in NDP MP Olivia Chow's riding before it scrambles toward Conservative-held Aurora. Interestingly, Lunn's list puts 27 of Ontario's 33 torch relay events in Conservative ridings.

Equally worthy of an arched eyebrow is how communities in the Beauce, with a combined population of around 50,000 and represented by former Conservative cabinet minister Maxime Bernier, rate a two-day, three-stop visitation. The Conservative riding of Kenora gets two stops and, as the local MP has proudly announced, $30,000 in hosting help from the federal government.

What must immigrants think when they come to Canada, their chosen land, and see us squabbling about such stupid things as whether prisoners should be allowed to smoke. Most immigrants are just happy to be safe!

We live in astounding times in Canada. We lack nothing. We have the most peaceful country in the world, we have never attacked another nation with the intent to conquer.(Okay there is that one time that we burnt down the White House, but who's counting) We welcome people from all nations, and we impose no regulations on them, except to live in peace among all the other people of Canada. Most take up the call and become proud Canadians.

My next door neighbour is a refugee from Czechoslovakia, her niece has come here on a one year work visa. She got a job within two days of landing here. Those are the type of people we need in Canada. They do not come here to live off of the taxpayers of Canada, but to contribute to our nation.

Words fail me.

Quebec a loser in stimulus sweepstakes: CP analysis

OTTAWA — Stimulus money earmarked for Quebec is only trickling down to communities in the province, while other provinces are awash in federal funds, an analysis by The Canadian Press shows.

Haggling among three levels of government has dramatically slowed the flow of construction and jobs, prompting municipal leaders to ask for an extension of the two-year deadline set by Ottawa.

"We're wasting time," said Bernard Genereux, the president of the Federation of Quebec Municipalities and mayor of St-Prime, QC. "It's punishing municipalities. It's preventing us from getting to work. We're losing the first year of the program."

Quickly, then ... we need a bright, shiny thing for the mentally crippled. Oh, look.

Court OK's new National Post ownership structure

An Ontario court approved a new ownership structure for the National Post on Friday, heading off the shut down of its operations.

Owner Canwest Global will be allowed to shuffle the newspaper into a group alongside its other daily newspapers, a move it said would be the best hope for saving the paper from going under.

And how exactly is that going to save the Post? Oh:

Canwest has been restructuring under protection from its creditors and had asked to put the money-losing Post into the Canwest Limited Partnership — which is not among divisions of the company currently operating under creditor protection — in order to save cash.

In short, other Canwest operations that aren't losing money will be forced to prop up the financial money pit that is the Post. Huh. How ironic -- the screechiest, most right-wing supporter of unabashed capitalism and the unfettered free market in Canada, crawling hat in hand to its sibling newspapers for a handout to keep it from going under.

And given how much Canada's Blogging Tories are down on that whole welfare thing, one would expect them to be absolutely outraged by this latest socialist development. One would be wrong:

How fitting that on Halloween, the National Post rises from the dead to walk the earth once more to torment the unenlightened masses of moonbats. It's great news simply from a media diversity POV. We conservatives are sick of the unabashedly leftist, Trudeaupian drivel coming from most of the other rags in this country, ...

Here's a thought, Mike ... if those "unabashedly leftist, Trudeaupian" media outlets are still around and financially viable, while the relentlessly right-wing Post is tanking, doesn't that tell you what the market wants? I thought that's what you conservative dingbats were all about -- survival of the fittest, let the market decide, you know, that sort of thing.
