Apparently, it's all a matter of context.

Over at Spanky's clubhouse, clubmember Shane Edwards reveals the sordid and seedy side of polygamy:

Polygamy: Maybe They Aren’t All Consenting Adults

As reports come out about legalizing polygamy, and proponents speak of the victimless nature of multiple women choosing to live with one man, comes this opinion of a woman trapped in a polygamous cult until she was 14:

“I don’t know how a woman can allow another woman to come into her home and cook some supper up with the family for her and go to bed with her husband that night and respect herself.

I don’t see how that is possible. You have to let a part of yourself go. A part of something in you, you have to squash that down in order to live with that every day.”

Tune in tomorrow as Shane is surprised to learn that ugly things happen in regular, heterosexual marriages as well, but he's not quite sure what to make of that.

Gee, maybe Shane Edwards can ask this of the CPC MP representing the riding in which Bountiful BC is located about this issue, seeing as that place is loaded with polygamists members of a religious cult that marries brainwashed teenage girls (like the one he cited) to middle age and older men. Oh wait, I know why he can't do that, it wouldn't hurt liberals/lefties but the CPC MP and possibly his party for being willing to condone such abuses.

CC - I'm confused, surely you're not condoning the marriage of 13 year old girls (well below the age of consent) to old men? I grew up right near bountiful and have had interactions with many members of the sect. It's not personal freedom or personal choice, these young girls are brainwashed and indoctrinated well before they could possibly be mature enough to make an informed intelligent decision. Perhaps I'm misreading your post, I certainly hope so.

Cornucrapia: I believe that what CC is making fun of is not concern about polygamy itself, but rather that the sole complaint about polygamy in Edwards's post is that someone else is available to cook supper.

Huh? What reports? Which proponents?

...I'd go over to check to see if I'm missing something, but the tard-blog is currently down, so...well, that it's for me on this installment of "How Stupid is The Politic?"

The same thing can be said of any organized cultural or religious group. And the brainwashing and indoctrination are not limited to prepubescent girls, but to all children...and with the full cooperation, condonation, and collusion of their parents.

Perhaps, but there's a vast difference between having children attend church every Sunday and having them marry as an adolescent.

I agree with Corn. What precisely is the point of this post?

"having them marry as an adolescent."

well, then, how do you feel about adults consenting to a polygamous marriage?

Rabbit, in my world, having (ie, forcing) children attend church every Sunday against their wills is tantamount to child abuse. Apparently, your world thinks it's okay to do so. Different cultures. And in still other cultures, adolescent marriages are just fine. I said it's all brainwashing and indoctrination. I don't remember saying it was all bad.

What I'm seeing in this article from The Politic is an automatic linking of polygamy with child abuse, an attempt to glue them together by using faux religion as an excuse, and calling one no different from another.

Polygamy does not equal child abuse does not equal religious fauxnatics.

not i. stuck in nonogamy, myself.

i've brought up the issue of polygamy a couple of times on my own blog. aside from the "forced adolescent" angle, i can't think of a reason to outlaw the practice, though it's not to my own tastes.

Yeah, KEvron, I saw the comments you provoked a year and a half ago. No hysterics, no heart attacks, no world falling apart...

Hmmm. When did we get to be such an accepting bunch?

I agree to an extent that indoctrinating children in any sort of religion is inappropriate, but there is a massive degree of difference between sunday school and marrying a 50 year old at 13. As for polygamy between consenting adults, anything you want to do in your bedroom (assuming everyone is consenting) is a-ok if a little freaky with me. Polygamy isn't what I have an issue with, it's pedophilia, surely we can all recognize the distinction, even when both are occurring at the same time?

Apologies for the spam but I just saw this article and it seemed quite relevant

note that the bountiful community originally being discussed had strong ties with the main Utah group until they recently parted ways over who would succeed the old "prophet" when he died. This actually caused a schism among the bountiful community itself with some following the newly appointed "prophet" in Utah and others endorsing the claims of Winston Blackmore, the local leader of Bountiful
