There's a couple of reasons.

First, you've already seen what passes for the level of intellectual discourse in Gatsby's universe. What else can you say about someone who won't take "No" for an answer, and responds with the petulance of a six-year-old, spamming someone else's blog with insults? If you've been following the exchange here lately, you might remember that, on at least three occasions, I've asked Gatsby explicitly to provide evidence or links to prove something. On every occasion, he's fumed and sputtered, and changed the subject. So, let me turn the question around: Is this someone you'd want to debate? I didn't think so.

And let me disabuse you of the notion that one only refuses a debate because one is scared. Personally, I'd love to debate George W. Bush. I'm pretty sure I'd mop the floor with him on damn near any subject. But there's not much point in my calling up the White House, acting infantile, and yelling, "Hey, George, come on and debate! What's the matter? You a coward? Come on. You're chicken, aren't you?"

I doubt I'd get a reaction like, "Wow, if we refuse to debate this CC guy, we're going to look bad. And we don't want that, do we?" No, I'm pretty sure I'd get a reaction like, "This is the Secret Service. If you don't stop harassing the president, we will find out who you are, hunt you down and kill you." The White House clearly doesn't give a shit what I think, and they wouldn't waste the oxygen on me, but this doesn't give me the right to go prancing down the street afterwards, singing, "The president is scaaaaaared, the president is scaaaaaared. Heeee won't debate meeeee."

And, as a final point, if someone thinks I'm dodging the discussion, let them consider the insular, well-protected world of George W., who has set a new record in lack of press conferences, strict screening of campaign rallies, insistence on loyalty oaths, protection against even the faintest whisper of dissenting views from those around him, and so on. And someone has the gall to think I'm running and hiding? That's about as delusional as it gets, don't you think?

Anyway, that's my story, and we all know that Gatsby will be by at some point and read it, and how he reacts will speak volumes about his maturity. If he has any, he will finally just accept that I really don't want anything more to do with him, he will stop spewing right-wing invective all over my blog, and he'll move on. He might even pause and think, "You know, that CC guy has a point. George Bush really does protect himself totally against even the most minimal dissenting viewpoint. Gee, I wonder why I'd never noticed that before."

Or Gatsby will ignore everything written here, and post another "Hey, CC! Come on! Debate me! Come on, you coward! Scared? Yeah, I thought so ... etc, etc."

Time, as they say, will tell. And, yes, I will continue to delete Gatsby's comments. As I have already said, if he has something to say, he has a blog on which to say it. And y'all already know where that is.CChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11406057201126015750noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6708375.post-1106974298641721392005-01-28T23:51:00.000-05:002005-01-28T23:51:00.000-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6708375.post-1106973798828672542005-01-28T23:43:00.000-05:002005-01-28T23:43:00.000-05:00Dude, Gatsby asked to live debate u like 20 times....Dude, Gatsby asked to live debate u like 20 times.
