You can't put a price tag on ego.

So ... what price for 72 hours of unabashed, pretentious primping and preening of one's ego on the world stage? Ah, a billion dollars:

Summit costs hit $1.1B

The cost of hosting the G8 and G20 summits next month in Ontario now stands at $1.1 billion and further outlays are likely, federal documents show.

The price tag includes $160 million for hospitality, infrastructure, food safety and extra staffing. That amount is in addition to the $933-million security bill the Tories revealed earlier this week.

"This might be the most expensive 72 hours in Canadian history," Liberal MP Mark Holland said.

And if my calculations are correct, that would put the price of five minutes of everyone standing around, waiting for Stephen the Corpulent to get back from the bathroom for the group photo at around $1,150,000, easily the most expensive dump of all time.

SOMEONE SHOULD PUNCH VIC TOEWS IN THE MOUTH: Seriously:

When asked by the Liberals during Wednesday's question period to explain the costs, [egregious philanderer and hypocrite Vic] Toews said the government believes the experts when they say such a level of security is necessary.

"I understand that the Liberals don't believe in securing Canadians or the visitors here," Toews told the House. "We're different."

Tune in tomorrow when Stephen Harper sonorously proclaims:

"I can understand why the Opposition would prefer that visiting international leaders were violently assaulted or assassinated while on Canadian soil. We're different."

To the mainstream media's everlasting shame, they would simply print that and move on.

Conservatives are idiots.

When experts have told them that their new minimum sentencing and "tough on crime" would not work. The Connies decided to go ahead anyways and will now be saddling Canadians with an American style prison system. Because, somehow, Conservative ideology is better than facts and reality...

What gets me is that Conservatives can say the most outrageous lies and their followers will justify them. The initial cost was $179 million but now it is $1.1 billion.
Toews goes on to say that this is "most efficient and effective". The biggest whopper from Toews is this: "This has been budgeted for, and the money is released as it is required,"... Toews is not putting the blame of the "experts"..

One only has to look at previous G20 summit security cost (Pittsburgh $18 million or London $30 million) to know that something is wrong with this Conservative government.

I worry that they cannot even get the simplest of estimates right, they cannot even take responsibility for their actions. Conservatives are children.

I'd like to know exactly where all this money is going. You get the feeling that this is buying out people?

Now I have a reason to protest at the G8/G20.

If anyone or any group wanted to see harm coming to any of these leaders, trust me, they will somehow make sure that harm comes to their intended target and perhaps some collateral damage as bonus.

No amount of tax payer dollars or closing the city to tourists is going to stop that.

Some zealous protester would more than likely find a way to get in and cause some kind of distraction if they really wanted to.

The Conservative government is manufacturing fear and would likely get boners, ejaculate and then shit their pants at a terrorist attack. They are children.

It's really too bad that the Libs under Iggy are too brain damaged to do anything.

There's a mistake in your implication - the mainstream media clearly doesn't have any shame, or they couldn't possibly behave in the ways they do.

Oh, and yes, I would rather save 500 millions dollars on lesser security (leaving a modest 433 million) and have a leader of a foreign country, or our own illustrious leader, feel less safe. You can put a price tag on such things. There is such a thing as too much. And this is where the media will fail miserably. It's not a "safety vs no safety" issue, it's a "exactly how mush safer did the last $500 million make it that teh first $500 million didn't?".

I think $1 billion is too little. Why not $10 billion? Why doesn't the CPC believe in securing Canadians or the visitors here?

As long as Obama flies in on his own plane, has his own armoured car delivered here for the motorcade to drive downtown, has his own numerous armed Secret Service agents securing wherever he is staying, and in effect has a completely separate security system on top of the one provided by Harper, our CPC government is not spending enough money on Security.

Why doesn't the CPC believe in securing Canadians and visitors, especially the leader of our neighbour? Why do they hate Obama?
