Hiatus! And thanks for all the fish.

Dr. Dawg has the right idea -- a month away from the blog. Of course, he has an actual excuse -- academic research.

Me? I'm just tired.

Now I could yammer on endlessly regarding my justification ... hey, why don't I do just that? In a nutshell, I'm tired not so much of blogging but what it's turned into. Used to be it represented some humour, some snark and -- most importantly -- actual, genuine intellectual discourse.

Well, those times are long gone, aren't they? Look around. If you're a Canadian progressive, who exactly are you going to exchange intellectual banter with? Hunter? Dodo? Kate McMillan? Neo Conservative? Ezra Levant? Kathy Shaidle? Sandy Crux? Dr. Jabba the Roy?

And even if you put in some legitimate civil effort (as a number of progressives have done), you know what's coming? "Harharhar, stupid leftards, it sure is easy to upset them, harharhar!" Followed immediately by the inevitable savage and brutal comment moderation and deletion. No intellectual discourse for those folks.

Quite simply, there's no middle ground to even attempt discourse any more. Canada's conservatives aren't just, well, conservative. No, they are, for the most part, screeching, scientifically illiterate bigots, racists and hypocrites. And after a while, simply mocking them gets tedious and repetitive. I mean, how long can I milk the theme of, "Hey, did you see the awesomely stupid thing that [insert random Blogging Tory name here] wrote today!?!?" You start to feel that you might as well just number code the jokes to save time. After all, I need only write "Molecules!" to inform everyone that Sandy Crux just posted something howlingly idiotic.

But, really, in the end, I just have other, more important things I want to do. It's been fun but, after well over 10,000 posts and over one and a quarter million visitors, there's other stuff I'd rather spend my time on -- books to read, technical tutorials to write, courseware to design, people to bounce some business ideas off of, seminars to give, conferences to attend, development kits on which to install Linux ... well, you get the idea. And when I think about it (and it doesn't take much thought), all of the above appeals to me way more than mocking Stephen Taylor for whatever asinine piece of offal he posted yesterday.

Will this stick? Who knows? Perhaps there's an up-and-coming blogger who wants to join the crew at CC HQ and poke stupid right-wingers with a sharp stick. If you're out there and this sounds like you, drop me a note and we'll see. But when I look around, I'm pretty sure the Canadian Progress-o-sphere is in good hands. And if there are any bloggy get-togethers, sure, I might crash it and socialize with my ideological buds.

But for now, at least, I've got a buttload of cool technical projects and people who want more of my time and, in the grand scheme of things, those cool technical projects have a lot more appeal than whatever douchebagitude Steve "The Premature eJankulator" Janke horked up recently.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some work to do for a high-tech European company and I feel like doing a good job of it. And that means starting today. Now.

Well, OK, after a glass of scotch. Then I'll start. And thanks for all the fish.

P.S. Molecules! You had to know that was coming.

So those halcyon days of intellectual engagement with the right are gone, but...when were they, anyway? Seriously, who did you use to have this discourse with, do you remember?

wv: pratte (are you insinuating something?)

Sadly, I only discovered your blog this past year. I will certainly miss it, as I think it's one of the best out there. Sometimes though, politics just seems so dirty, and I can understand the need to clear one's head of it.
Best of luck with everything!

I'm a regular reader, and I can't disagree with the sentiment. But being a regular reader, and having met you in person, I strongly suspect that kvetching's too much a part of your nature, and that your hiatus won't stick (not that there's a problem with that, or that I'll be disappointed if you return). I myself am on a hiatus from talk.origins, and I'll admit that I miss it. But like you, my professional life has gotten extremely hectic. I suppose that moderation in all things is something to be desired.

A well-deserved sabbatical, CC.
You'll be missed.

Great, now I have to re-align my Blog Roll.

CC, I have only been reading your blog for a year or so, but will miss it. Good luck with your projects. I suspect we'll see your wit from time to time in the comment threads. Take care and have some fun, too!

You entertain and educate all at once. Your daily contribution to the chaos in my head will be missed.

Thanks CC.

What you did was to reveal the hideous squirming reality under the garden rock called "Canadian Conservatism."

If people want to know how people like Stockwell Day, Jason Kenney, John Baird, Ritz, Clement, Guergis, etc., could get elected, they'd understand after reading your blog.

I thank you sir.

CC, I have no idea what you are talking about. With sadly few exceptions, Conservatives online have always been insane.

Anyway, I basically took a break from blogging a year or two ago for the same reason. Occasionally, I show up on a whim, but that's it these days.

I have too many responsibilities also.

It appears DM will miss you too.

I've said on my own blog that there's only so long that you can shovel $#17 out of the septic tank that is current conservative thought. At some point you have to take it to the real world and leave the Conservatives to keyboard themselves a Klein Bottle universe.

Wonder how long it'll take Jabba or one of the others to start claiming it was them that "scared you off" or some such idiocy.

Enjoy your rest. And can't help hoping it actually isn't permanent.

WV = "soloact"
You always have been.

My first read of the day. A good snark is hard to find. You read the Conblogs so I didn't have to. Etc. Perhaps some scamp will step up to the plate and take your place but it will be a hard place to take.

There's a lot of that going around. Pointing out Teh Stoopid can be a soul-sucking endeavour.

Hopefully you'll be moved to make some commentary after Harpie drops the writ and the country is galvanized into that frenzied state of collective goofiness known as a "Federal Election".

Take it easy cc, and thanks for all the LOLs.

Seriously, thanks for the primo snark.

When I first discovered this place I laughed and read the archives...in a couple of hours. Been coming here ever since, what am I going to do now?

Cheers, CC, it's been great. I won't be deleting the bookmark anytime soon.

Regards from the Eastern Front.

Well there probably won't be an election before the fall now, so you might as well keep your powder dry for a while. I don't think the ability to see through BT BS will atrophy.

This is a shame. I understand the fatigue, but none of the others have the same wit or style. Get fully recharged before you try to come back. I'll check in regularly.

CK said...

Oh looky here. Bocanut, is that your way of saying you'll miss CC? Where will you troll to now?

Another delusional rat deserting the progressive ship.
I'm surprised there were 27 comments before the "stay and tire yourself out some more" baiting campaign began. Naturally supplied by the master baiter. Well at least one of them. I currently have another one, PR, on the leash trying to bait me into wasting lots of time rehashing arguments he already lost.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

I think Boca was referring to himself. Maybe he'll become a full time Plentyoffish user.

Snark is the bait that keeps conservatives in a perpetual state of fury. You can't possibly stop now.

Ack. I can't bear to think of Cons not being ridiculed publicly.

Miss the snark.

CC; have a fun staycation. And thank your for the five or six years of entertainment. I really do owe you some scotch.

I think we should divvy the spoils until CC comes back. I'm going to start with the low hanging fruit (Molecules!) and move down from there.

Sorry to see it, this is a site I check at the beginning of my blogging day because I love the snark, sarcasm, and cynicism aimed at the appropriate targets. I can relate though, a good chunk of why I disappeared for a couple of years was burnout combined with taking things too seriously to the point my health was being affected. Hope you won't need anywhere near as long as I did though, you were always a much more valuable and read resource than I, for good reason too. I can't do the brevity you do so well, and my snark takes more verbiage to work, ah well to each their own natures be true.

Sparky said...

Wow...
In the 'swan song' thread by CC in which he states that he's taking a hiatus because of the perpetual insanity and inanity of the BT's and 'those on the right', boca comes along and just makes the point crystal clear.
The very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results--cc continually documented the hypocrisy and douchbagitude of the BT's and cohorts with the slim hope that maybe, one day, someone 'over there' would get it.
Alas, the dim bulbs just got their knickers in a knot over the 'naughty words' without any kind of introspection regarding their aforementioned douchbaggery.
'Cause, you know, someone using naughty words when showing how wrong you are definitely trumps you being wrong about everything all the time...
Meh, it was a hopeless battle--cc brought intelligence, nuance and truth to a 'dumb and dumber' festival.
I would go so far as to state it was a pretty useless battle as well--these people are ignorant and they take great pride in that fact--they *want* to be ignorant. They go out of their way to ignore *any* evidence of truth just to maintain their ignorance.
Just look at boca's first comment (since removed)--he can't even understand what cc stated in the simplest of terms.
My god these people are the very definition of obtuse and addleminded.
Have a good vaca, cc. you did your best but, as always, it was pearls before the swine.

Au contraire, there is the case of Wayne. I doubt he has torn up his CPC membership, but he recently upped his game to the point his words were no longer deleted on sight because he made a series of intelligent comments. He sounded like he is growing disillusioned with the Harpocracy, and probably very disillusioned with the mindlessness of many BTs. So intelligent life does exist over there.

Sparky said...

Yes, but let's figure out the cost of that 'one'--
13,414 blog posts
>1,250,000 visits
countless asinine comments from the obtuse
threats of legal proceedings
constant idiotic attacks from mullet-boy and others
and Wayne showed signs of improvement...
Dunno, but that's a little 'using a spoon to empty the ocean'...
I love reading this blog and I'll keep coming back, but it's preaching to the choir--those that actually grok what cc's on about are already on the same page. No new converts are forthcoming.
Though, to be said, sometimes it's not about 'winnning friends and influencing people'--sometimes it's just about pointing out the truth--getting it out there--blatantly at times, just so no one can claim later, 'we didn't know!!'
Ummm, yes you did and cc (and the like) have been pointing it out for years but you were too obtuse to get it...

So if I'm reading Dawg correctly, might this be a temporary thing, maybe a summer break?

Btw, slapping some advertising on the blog to generate some income might not be a bad idea.

liberal supporter said...

Dunno, but that's a little 'using a spoon to empty the ocean'...

True, but I considered the Wayne outlier to be significant, in a SETI "we only need one example to prove there is intelligent life elsewhere" kind of way.

I've learned a lot visiting here.

catnip said...

Your first mistake was assuming there was intelligent life to be found in the BT brigade. How you lasted this long, I'll never know.

Enjoy your new projects.

(You'll be back. You know you will. Get a massage or two and grab some sunshine. Oh - and breathe. That helps.)
