Jesus, Stephen, you're an asshole.

Just when you think Stephen Taylor can't be even more of a total douchebag, there's this:

As Milewski remarked, and as CTV’s Roger Smith confirms below, Michael Ignatieff is on vacation in Europe while Jack Layton is snorkling in Belize. Opponents to prorogation have remarked with some hyperbole that “MPs just gave themselves a three month vacation”. While the Conservative line is that MPs are indeed working in their ridings consulting with constituents on the next phase of the economic recovery, it is Stephen Harper’s opposition that is on vacation. Grassroots Canadians on the left are upset that their Parliamentarians aren’t “working” in Ottawa, while their partisan leadership jets off for a little R&R.

Or maybe, Steve, you useless jackass, they're on vacation because those were the vacations they were planning to take all along, it being the holidays and all.

Can someone just punch Stephen Taylor in the mouth? Christ, what a complete ass.

Ignatieff is supposed to be out my way on Monday - seriously, if the chance comes up to ask in front of a crowd, any single question that sticks out in your mind? As stupid as the idea of a cross-country check-in is for the opposition leader in year 2, it could be fun...

I've been thinking of what bothers me about our present crop of Conservatives and it comes down to their dishonesty and lies.

It would not be so bad if they were honest even in their intentions.

You have the Frasier institute that release studies with the pretence that these are neutral/non-biased studies...

A center for Democracy that is just a clearing house for right-wing misinformation....

The National Post that is supposed to employ journalist but are really right-wing partisan hacks...

Pollster that are just echo chambers...

You'd think that their sole goal is to misinform the public...

Then, they claim that others have a bias just for doing their jobs...

Add their stifling of legitimate debate, refusal for corrections when they are always proven wrong, the inherent dishonesty....

Well yes, Stephen Taylor is a lying douchebag and his "followers" cretins...

Adam, chances are that you'll likely be able to ask Iggy a legitimate question and he'd answer you over Harper taking one... While most would agree that Iggy is a failure as a leader, he has yet suck to the level of dishonesty that is endemic to the Connies...

How many were trained by the Fraser Institute in the last 22 years?

Great link, Holly. Lot of familiar characters there. What's so interesting to those of us who've come across these people is how deranged they are to the point that one really is talking, clinically, about major personality disorders.

It's scary and fascinating, all at the same time.

Here are some civil disobedient things to consider doing:
1. Email your Conservative MP constantly and request a meeting in his/her constituency office, keep track of correspondence and responses, be persistent, make them work at home, tie up his/her time meeting with non-Conservatives, go in with complicated files to deal with, get a passport, assistance with the renovation rebate program, be creative, but make them be in the office meeting with you;
2. Start a “Boo Harper” campaign on Facebook and Twitter, to boo whenever he or one of his Ministers appear at an Olympic event in BC, wear black armbands with the Conservative logo with a red circle and diagonal line threw it, until democracy returns to Canada;
3. Send an email to the Governor General with the
Subject heading: Resign
Dear Governor General:
Although I appreciate that you are doing a fantastic job handing out medals, awards and anniversary greetings, as well as, traveling around the country and the world, not to mention eating seal meat; your real job is to be a check in our Constitutional system of government and to protect the institutions of democracy that support it and make it accountable to the people, on this responsibility you have failed and have weakened our democracy, therefore, I regretfully request that you resign since you have already abdicated your Constitutional duties entrusted to you by the people of Canada.

It's funny that many of working for these "institutes" are very apt at working at public institutions...

I'm thinking of Marcel Boyer from the Montreal Economic Institute... He should be asked who pays for his retirement, could it be the University of Montreal?

Thanks for the link Holly, Not a Conspiracy Theory: How Business Propaganda Hijacks Democracy sounds interesting.

Plenty of academics working in public institutions have a lot to answer for when it comes to this distributed conspiracy.

I was passed over as a recruit back in grad school. Not for any reasons I could understand at the time; I just didn't like any of these people at all. Way too ambitious in light of their complete lack of any discernible talent (apart from very practised sneering and a rather unseemly and juvenile habit of gossipping), which must of been the most important selection criteria.

I wonder if other names crop up in that book? Aaron Lee Wudrick, Adam Daifallah, Tasha Kheiriddin, L'il Stevie Taylor himself?

And then the dittoheads complain about Universities, newspapers and institutions being biased...

What I love about all of that is how people like Harper are quick to mock Dion and Ignatieff for being academics and think tank members etc etc, you know for never having had a "real" job. But as soon as you dig a bit you discover that Harper, except for part time jobs when he was young, has never held anything but university, political or think tank jobs in his life (I could be wrong - please correct me if I am).. the whole Tax Payers Association crowd seems the same to me as well...

Now I don't care, some people get those kind of jobs and other people get other kinds of jobs, but to mock people for being out of touch with "real" people based on their work background while sharing the same background seems like a lie.

Apart from unspecific references to working in some entry-level position having something to do with computers (database design, I believe) that fact has never been disproved. Did he even ever have a summer job as a student?

The real absurdity in all of that is that everyone's employment is a *real job*; it's the business elite's cynical attempt to divide people and to suggest some jobs are more *real* than others, particularly when, at the same time as it's championing the market to determine the nature and value of "real jobs," it's employing legions of courtiers who are sheltered completely from market forces.

The ethics are appalling.

Really, Ty-Guy, if some Canadians can be more Real than others, why can't some jobs be more real than others?

wv: "epology," whatever that means.

Ti-Guy said...

I don't have a lot energy for your koans, Seer.

When it comes to my own litmus test for "real" versus other Canadians, it usually comes down to people who truly believe they are subject to a constitutional order that does not exist in this country and who imagine their history to be one quite different than the one made up of the events that actually occurred in the past.

I would call them surreal Canadians.

What could possibly be more ludicrous than a politician who claims to want to run government like a business.

Omigawd, how ironic "promaker".

A *lot* of people working in the non-private sector bought into that over the last few decades.

What I've been loving recently are the critics of MBA programs coming out of the woodwork recently to assert that business management theory over the last few decades was based on pseudo-science, some of it outright fraudulent. So even businesses stopped being run like businesses. Which explains a hell of a lot, you have to admit.

Larry "I'm going to run the City of Ottawa like a business" O'Brien, who should be in jail, in my opinion, has ensured we have no emergency fund. One big storm and "SNOW DAY!!" - until spring.

why the hissy fit, cc?

i had quite a giggle over the story... people in glass house and all that.

if this prorogation silliness REALLY was a crisis they should have interrupted their vacations and come back home. it isn't and they didn't.

Who said it was a crisis? It's bad government. And the New Conservatives deserve to lose the next election. They don't want to govern.
