Democracy? Never heard of it.

Via Mr. Sinister, we are reminded that Prime Minister Stephen Harper never really understood this whole Canadian election thingy:

Brian Topp from yesterday:

The Prime Minister’s very first line captured the whole Conservative case: “Mr. Speaker, the highest principle of Canadian democracy is that if one wants to be prime minister one gets one’s mandate from the Canadian people and not from Quebec separatists.”

That, of course, is not true. The highest principle of Canadian democracy is that Parliament gets its mandate from the Canadian people, and then selects a ministry from among its ranks to do its bidding. But truth had nothing to do with what happened next.

It's odd that, after all this time, Stephen Harper still doesn't understand how elections work in this country. I'm expecting Captain Canada Stephen Taylor to smack him down proper for his overwhelming ignorance any day now. Yessir, any day now ...

You didn't even remotely bite on that, did you?

The Topps sez: “Mr. Speaker, the highest principle of Canadian democracy is that if one wants to be prime minister one gets one’s mandate from the Canadian people and not from Quebec separatists.”

It is too true.

If you lived SOTB you would now that the reason Kenyan-born Obama is not Our President is that he owes his election to, as they say in Yiddish, the schwarz's, and Americans of Convenience.

Topp's insight explains why Canada's New Government isn't a minority government at all: If you look at the votes of Real Canadians, as opposed to the votes of Semi-Real Canadians and/or Canadians of Convenience, the CPOC is a majority party in Parliament. That explains why it is unconstitutional to deprive the CPOC of its rightful place in Government but not unconstitutional to ignore the so-called "will of Parliament."

No kidding. They're Members of Parliament - JUST LIKE ALL OF THE OTHER MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT.

Who the hell does Stephen Harper think he is, I wonder?

Harper has plenty of MPs in his caucus who are just as ignorant. My MP, for instance, said this year that she wishes there were no such thing as question period. And yet the Cons make a big deal of accountability. Or used to.

Yeah ... That "accountability" thing they trumpeted at the close of the last Liberal government ... Where did that get to?

"Redacted" documents, leaked to friendlies but not submitted whole to Parliamentary committees, firing underlings and technocrats for political mistakes, massive blunders in foreign affairs and the Afghan war, all covered in a delicious layer of dog-whistles, groupthink, and denialism.

Wonder why half the country doesn't bother to vote anymore?
