Huh. Curious:

Movin' on, then ...

SO HOW'S THAT COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM WORKING OUT FOR YOU?

I guess you missed Half a Pint of Bitter, who uses Lepine (a Catholic) as an excuse to call for a ban on Muslim immigration.

I think I'll one up her and blog for a ban on male immigration period.

@Balbulican
Lepine did not practise any religion. Calling him a Muslim or Catholic is a stretch.

It just goes to show what kind of mental gymnastic these assmonkeys will go to invent a talking point that justifies their bigotry.

The Wiki entry on Lepine is surprisingly neutral but incomplete. There is an overemphasis on his being a "loner". This is only partly true. His high school reunion was held last year and many remembered him differently.

One aspect that is never spoken about, is that he did have a girlfriend in College - I can understand her wanting to keep her privacy.

As I've said before, his suicide note doesn't say anything that Rightwing pundits, the Taliban, Republican Party nominee hopefuls, New Conservative government members, don't say every day about women.

The other side of that which is interesting is that, as soon as it's convenient, the whole "muslim isn't a race" thing goes out the door eh?

I remember that night so vividly. Waiting for my sister, who hadn't heard, to come home. Hugging her when she walked in the door.

The whole city felt on edge and raw for weeks.

CWTF, my point is that there is as much or more justification for referring to Lepine as "Catholic" as "Muslim" (he was baptized, and his mother - who raised him - is a former nun), and that the religion of his parents is irrelevant. The man was insane.

The man was insane.
Yes, and hence the futility of trying to find "meanings" that aren't there.

An extract from his suicide note:

"Even if the Mad Killer epithet will be attributed to me by the media, I consider myself a rational erudite that only the arrival of the Grim Reaper has forced to take extreme acts. For why persevere to exist if it is only to please the government. Being rather backward-looking by nature (except for science), the feminists have always enraged me. They want to keep the advantages of women (e.g. cheaper insurance, extended maternity leave preceded by a preventative leave, etc.) while seizing for themselves those of men."

Sounds like any number of Feminist-hating pundits these days to me.

Er, except for that Grim Reaper bit, of course. That's pretty out there.

"cheaper insurance"? Yeah, cause the fucking femminists have taken over the actuarial tables.

I wonder how the stupid misoginistic prick would feel now that it's "parental leave" and you can do any combo of Mom or Dad...

I've had all these arguments with people for 20 years now. "he was muslim" "he was catholic" "he was a loner" "he was crazy"...

He was probably an amalgamation of all these things, which is to say he was human and off the time and place he was from.

The Brownmiller line always sticks in my head "Why do men rape and beat women? Because they can."

As someone who has had some exposure to nuns, I assure you that if your mother was a former nun, you would be insane too. Doesn't mean you're going to be a homicidal maniac, but it does mean you're going to be insane.

"blede"

@The Seer,

I have a distant cousin whose mother is former nun. He's doing quite well. No more insane than the rest of us. And as for his Mom, she's probably one of the most normal in my family.

Mmmm, maybe that doesn't say much for me. :)

Why is there nothing on this blog about "climategate"?
