Conservative cognitive dissonance.

It's more than a little amusing to watch the vast majority of Canada's Cons viciously slagging Maher Arar, considering that -- theoretically, at least -- he's exactly the kind of immigrant they claim to admire.

Here's Brenda/"Hunter", praising immigrants as long as they pass the Hunter test:

My next door neighbour is a refugee from Czechoslovakia, her niece has come here on a one year work visa. She got a job within two days of landing here. Those are the type of people we need in Canada. They do not come here to live off of the taxpayers of Canada, but to contribute to our nation.

So what's the deal with Maher Arar? Oh, look:

Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen born in Syria in 1970, came to Canada in 1987. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in computer engineering, Arar worked in Ottawa as a telecommunications engineer.

Well, I'll be dipped in chocolate -- it would appear that Arar is precisely the kind of immigrant that would give Brenda the warm fuzzies -- comes to Canada as a teenager, goes to college, gets two degrees, then settles down with a full-time job and contributes his fair share as a Canadian taxpayer. What's not to like?

Uh oh ... here's Brenda again:

Next we have this total miscarriage of justice for Canadian taxpayers: ...

For not torturing [Arar], we paid $10 million, that makes no sense, and I expect more "I am innocent" claims to be brought against the Canadian taxpayers. They will win, our Liberal judges guarantee it.

These people really are deranged.

I'm being ignored in BT land, because I keep asking if they support scrapping the hand gun registry. Since the long guns and hand guns are in the same registry, all the benefits of scrapping the long gun part won't be achieved if the hand gun registry continues. The costliness and uselessness of the long gun registry can only be addressed by scrapping the entire firearms registry.

I don't know why nobody wants to talk about that. They seem to all go "tilt" and say "Norman - coordinate".

Because they're all about teh "tough on crime." That's my guess. And they know the gun registry is supported by the cops.
