Ignorant: It's the new black.

Apparently, being a cultural yahoo is no longer anything to be ashamed of:

Fucking Liberal elites with their books and records and knowledge and stuff and everything. Who the hell do they think they are?

You know what's worse? They seriously judge him by it. During the last election somebody on Taylor's blog derided Dion for (probably) being more of a Mozart fan than a Rolling Stones fan (they are purportedly Harper's favourite music)... because we're in Grade 7 or something. The reasoning was that it's because that's more what The Average Joe listens to, because that's what matters in an election, that the party leader have superficial traits in common with The Working Man. (As long as we're not talking about Jack Layton, that is. Who is a communist.)

These people aren't just morons, they're shallow morons.

Of more import is this revelation:

My wife chops up broccoli and puts it in pasta, and you want to eat it until the cows come home. It’s fast, uncomplicated food, and it’s what I like to eat most evenings.

Pasta and broccoli nearly every night? Ewwww.

The problem is that Iggy reeks of elitism...

He brags about being a passing friend of Alfred Brendel. In my view it's not the knowledge but the bragging that makes him pretentious...

(and if Iggy had real taste, he'd champion Minoru Nojima)

I don't give a damn if he name-drops the Pope. If he can run things better than Stephen "Have you seen my gallery?" Harper and doesn't consider the Bible to be a policy document, he's acceptable to me.

I'd rather see the NDP get in, but at this point I'll take what I can get.

Ignatieff is pretentious, I'm not going to disagree with that. Hopefully, someone's advising him on how to "tone it down" to the Canadian standard of keeping one's pretentions low key.

Harper, on the other hand, is just a fraud with his faux-populism; like I've said before, these CONS have the nerve to argue that a 3.00 chai latte is elitist/pretentious whereas a 30.00 steak is not.

Of course, if the chai latte was ordered at Rahim Jaffer's coffee shop ... it's not elitist, it's supporting a good Conservative.

Hah! The name "Rahim Jaffer" don't sound Canadian to me.

The fake populism drives me utterly nuts. Basically we're to hate Iggy because he's worked as an author, as an academic and as a politician.

But we're to like Stephen because he's worked as an academic, speaker, dabbled in writing, worked as a think tank guy (that's academic twice no?) and as a politician?

Here's my two thoughts on this:
1) Stephen Harper has had exactly one job where anyone has ever judged him, the rest of the time he was sheltered by true believers or his academic mentors.
2) Why is it that people want leaders that are "just like them"? (which seemingly means "a but dumb and non-threatening") I'm pretty smart, I've got a pretty good education. I'm quite personable, fun to have a beer with and funny, in a manic, self-depreciating, snarky/sarcastic way. I. Am. Not. Fit. To. Run. The. Country. I'm just not. Neither are most people. I want the person who runs the country to be way smarter than me. I want them to be annoyingly smart. I don't want them to come over for dinner or buy me a beer. I want them to fix the problems in my country and I want them to make us the best country possible. I'd like them to think and plan... Hell, they can be complete pricks for all I care..
