Dear Libloggers: A hooker by any other name ...

Apparently, my recent screed about Jason Cherniak and liblogs.ca ruffled a few feathers in the Liblog-o-sphere, so let me take a minute and explain why those folks are being played for patsies.

I have to admit, I never really appreciated that liblogs.ca was the creation of that greasy little turd Cherniak. I just thought it was, you know, an aggregator for people who officially supported the Liberal Party of Canada. Imagine my surprise when I learned that Jason still runs Liblogs with an iron fist, going so far as to advertise the official position of Liblogs to the world and booting posts and people who had the unmitigated gall to disagree with him. (Cliff follows up here.) So let me explain this just once, and we'll move on.

You Libloggers are not blogging for yourselves, and you're not blogging for the Liberal Party of Canada. You're blogging for Jason Cherniak. When you put that much time and effort into popularizing an aggregator that Jason can commandeer whenever he wants to advertise "official" Liblogs positions, then you're nothing but cheap hookers. No, scratch that -- at least hookers get paid. You're doing it for free.

And now that Jason has demonstrated that he's ready to quash any disagreeable commentary, it should go without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that every single post any of you write from now on will be suspect, since we'll never know if you self-censored it to get it past the Jason-bot.

Quite simply, Libloggers, you are being used. Jason is taking all your work, and investing it in a forum from which he can amuse himself with his Napoleonic complex, or whatever the fuck it is he suffers from.

I have no intention of promoting that vile little douche or his despicable forum. If you want to continue blogging for Jason, hey, that's your call. But if that's your decision, you sure as hell won't be getting any shout-outs from my blogroll.

I can't do anything about Cherniak but I can, and have, unsubscribed from liblogs.

I'm still on LibLogs, and I regularly tell Jason he is a kool-aid drinking, kool-aid mixing partisan hack with no objectivity.

He still will not remove for some very strange reason,... maybe it is the secret brotherhood of short people or something,... although, I have as mush use for that as I do a hemorrhoid.

I'd rather stick around LibLogs and be a douchebag and a thorn in Jason side. (evil grin) which does give me an idea or two to play with.

Thanks for the links - I agree that the Liblog banner taints any and all blogs that carry it with the assumption of prior restraint by Jason Cherniak's editorial control. I probably won't be going to the effort of vacuuming them out of my blogroll though - sounds like a pain in the ass.

Fine. Apparently he owns the domain. It is worth noting that at least one of the administrators of Liblogs has come forward to indicate extreme unhappiness with that 'official statement' garbage and advise the blogosphere that going forward, it will take a plurality of votes by the Liblog administrators to put something like that at the top of the page again.

But there still seems to be censorship going on - although in at least one case it may be a matter of 'I was kicked off of Liblogs' VS 'you asked us to take you off' its a mess essentially.

MrvnMouse over at 1337hax0r has offered to provide space and bandwidth to those wanting to set up an alternative 'Gritblog' - that's probably the best solution.

I wonder how the Liberal Party of Canada feels about a racist (arguably Mr. Cherniak *is* a racist) running a website that many people would assume represents the party, and imposing his worldview on those who choose to associate with that website.

Jason Cherniak has been awfully quiet lately. It reminds me of Harper and his cronies "not available for comment" stance...

consider this my objection to the purging of the rolls. granted, cherniak is a large bag of vinegar and water and i will further stipulate that aggregators, in the general sense, are ego masturbation farms. but purging otherwise good folks from the roll for failing to quit liblogs is wrong. there are bound to be times when issues arise where i will disagree with you (cc) or LuLu and vice versa. what's more, there are times when readers and visitors might not see eye to eye with one of us or enjoy our chosen manner of expression. i shouldn't be held to account for every statement made by the boss. on the occasions where i have voiced differences with cc, those opinions have been given due and professional consideration, something cherniak might consider learning.

that all said, this isn't an aggregator and cc runs the show, his yard, his rules. cc is not answerable to me or anyone else, yet i have written things here that i know for a fact he has disagreed with and he has not censored them. he has not climbed up on his hind legs and stated our policy position for us on a personal or political level. cherniak, on the other hand, has evidently registered liblogs as a not for profit corporation and thus should be answerable to some form of board, having drafted bylaws and should also be answerable to the corporation's membership ie the bloggers associated with the site.

given that the goof is a lawyer, he should perhaps invest some of his valuable time in administering his corp[orate holdings in a more professional manner. i'm just saying. as an incorporated not for profit, he shouldn't be swaggering about the place like a little tyrant. that is a luxury reserved for sole proprietors, like cc. heh. and if the membership of liblogs care to be associated with a puffed up goober like cherniak, it is for their own consciences. i will continue to judge them by the content of their own work, just as i would like to be judged here.

Well it seems that Jason Cherniak does have some comments:
""Cherniak's love and support of slaughter and death."

It's called Libel. Pretty simple."

Thanks, C_WTF. Pale really knows how to do the cheeky stuff. ;-)

It's funnier given that Cherniak is implying that he will sue for LeDaro for libel and that poster is using the same words...
Our litigious Liberal will have to get a lot of paperwork ready I guess....

No feathers ruffled over here, Cynic. All I was doing was just stating publicly and politely at my blog that if the decision to impose collective punishment was what you're going to do, because ofwhat Jason does, c'est la vie.

Don't you think there is a difference between an aggregator and a blogroll?
Also, if you read the "goal" of the Liblogs and juxtapose that with Jason Cherniak's actions... well I won't state the obvious for you...

A blogroll does help in Google rankings, so while some good bloggers may get some reduced traffic (Red Tory is an excellent blogger) I'm not sure I would call it "collective punishment".
