I'm curious ...

I can’t decide if Rod "Massive Poll" Bruinooge and his super-secret, double-probation Pro-Life caucus are completely off the reservation with his too-precious shrieky comparison of fetuses and kidneys for sale on eBay!!!!11!!!!!1!.

Or has he been sent out with a backdoor, Big Daddy seal of approval to test the waters? Your thoughts/opinions in the comments if you please.

CC MUSES ... You know, I can remember when secret, back-room, multi-party coalitions were a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad thing. Oh, wait ... that was last week, wasn't it?

It's part of what will be a massive campaign by the Conservatives to deflect attention away from the economy.

I'm told backdoor methods are very effective at preventing the need for abortions.

Time will tell. If he's doing it without Prime Minister Steve's approval, Bruinooge will be in the doghouse very soon.

If you're a caucus member who squeaks without permission, you are slapped down within a day, publicly, and your fall on either your penknife or your sword, depending on how severe the breach.

No public chastisement or ceremonial repudiation on this one. Therefore: trial balloon. Count on it.

Lot of trial balloons in the air this month: hints at major cuts to Aboriginal funding, big cuts to CBC, a new push by the foetishists... pre-budget testing of waters.

It does smell like a trial balloon.

What I still can't figure out is whether Harper wants an election or not. Or is his strategy to play another round of "chicken" with Iggy?

The emphasis on it being a multi-party "secret" caucus is interesting.

I think Harper is taking the opportunity of a few quiet news weeks on Parliament Hill to start deflecting attention away from the economy.

Remember, this "Pro-life caucus" thing has been around for almost a decade, and it's always been secretive about its membership. The only reason it''s getting so much attention right now is because Parliament is prorogued and there's nothing else going on. Also because the caucus chairmanship has changed, and that doesn't happen every year. In fact, it hardly ever happens -- Maurice Vellacott has held the position for the last 8 years (latterly with Paul Steckle as co-chair).

It's also been suggested that this could be a trial balloon with the end game being cuts to abortion funding... but I'm pretty sure that funding falls under provincial jurisdiction.

In short, it's probably a non-issue. But it would still be fun to out the creeps!! :p

As an addendum to the above, I found out that this was originally announced almost 3 weeks ago, but it didn't get any traction because of everything else going on (proroguement, coalition leadership etc).

Someone apparently decided it needed to be announced again, for whatever reason.

Anyone else surprised (or shocked! Just shocked) that Bruinooge was given some space to spew in the National Birdcage Liner?

You know what, maybe it's a good thing this should come out now... I've been waiting for my chance to demand freedom of choice for how I sell my own kidney!

JJ: Healthcare funding is provincially controlled with transfer payments from the Feds. And how many of the fellow travellers cozying up to Harper (like his new boy Wall and ever supportive 'insert name of Leader of Alberta here') would be askance at 'shifting' what's paid for or not under the provincial plan with tacit approval from Conservative Central? This while NB is still struggling to get decent access for abortion services. At this point, I put nothing past them. Nothing. Especially with all the re-rigging of healthcare control gone on in Alberta.
