Shorter Stephen Harper: "What do you mean, you can't be my lawyer anymore just because I made all this shit up and lied to you about everything? I lie to Canadians all the time -- what makes you so fucking special? Hello? Hello?"

Clients lie to the lawyers all the time. No one cares. If a lawyer lies to the court, or introduces evidence he knows to be false. then all the lawyers and judges care. Even among lawyers, there are some ethical standards. But for the record, I doubt that could be the problem when your client is the prime minister of Canada.

Actually, I would think it would be double the problem when your client is the prime minister.

A lawyer is obliged to serve his client only so far as he does not breach the law himself, or countenance his client's breaching the law. That's the reason most lawyers are really careful about what information they require from their clients. They cannot legally argue that someone is not guilty when they know for a fact that he is guilty.
