They have running water, too, Paul. Go figure.

Blogging Tory Paul MacPhail is shocked -- shocked, I say -- that those Stone Age towelheads can handle high technology:

The Question That Should Have Been Asked

If you get a chance, watch the following segment on CBC's The National tonight.

AFGHAN CIVILIANS:According to a humanitarian watchdog--Human Rights Watch--more civilian deaths in Afghanistan from air strikes are fueling a public backlash in that country. A report released today says U.S. and NATO air strikes killed 116 civilians in 2006; in 2007, that number jumped to 321. The CBC's Alison Smith reports from Washington
.

I just watched the early airing. Not a pretty sight. Claims by the CBC of 90 Afghan women and children killed by American airstrikes. All caught on camera by an Afghani cellphone.

Question: Why does a poor Afghani, living in a remote region where there is no cellphone service, barely (if any) electricity to recharge a cellphone, and where the simplest of neccessities such as food are treasured, have a cellphone?

Damned right, Paul. After all, it's not as if those savages have any sort of technological infrastructure:

During that year, the number of cell phone companies in the Afghanistan increased from two to four, and the country now boasts 20 internet service providers ...

Or that there might be a good reason for cell phones to be so popular:

War in Afghanistan has ravaged the landline phone system so most communications are performed over wireless.

And it's not like cell phones are all that popular, anyway, right, Paul?

Afghanistan gets some 150,000 new cell phone subscribers each month and there is "no end in sight" to expansion in the sector, the country's communications minister said...

Coverage is generally available in all the country's 34 provinces.

As a Blogging Tory, Paul isn't really racist. He just can't quite figure out how those ragheads can handle fancy things like cell phones. 'Cuz those things are fer white folks, right, Paul?

P.S. Oh, and Paul? About that lack of electricity to recharge those phones? Apparently, some of those uncivilized darkies have a handle on the situation. Just so you know.

I recall that not long ago the right whingers were touting the high number of cellphones in the country as a sign that WE'RE WINNING!!!

Robert:

You're right, I'd completely forgotten that. And it would have been fun to do a search for that via the Blogging Tories search box but, curiously, Stephen Taylor removed that delightful feature a while back.

One can only guess why.

absolutely, and The Liberal party had nothing to do with Adscam, Nixon was innocent, Bill Clinton is a virgin, the pentagon was really hit by a 747. And Dion speaks perfect English. Who's to say Taliban didn't do it themselves for propaganda, it's not like they refrain from killing innocent people.

"ragheads" "uncivilized darkies" Why would you use those racist terms, while making your point?

Paul was asking how such poor people could afford cell service. He was suggesting that maybe the pictures were faked. Which has happened for time to time.

The moral of the story is... don't stand beside terrorists. Just like if you have a knife and the nice police officer says drop the knife.... you drop the knife. If not something bad is going to happen.

I have to ask, Wayne, who helps you get dressed in the morning? The wife? The kids? The long-suffering attendants at the home?

Seriously, how can you be this stupid and still function in a civilized society? Enquiring minds almost care.
