Give the keyboard back to Daddy ... that's a good boy.

Blogging Tory "Barrel Strength" wanders over from the kids' table and tries to talk all grown-up and stuff:

Peter Foster asks in today’s Financial Post:

“To put it in a nutshell, why is valid economic theory so counter-intuitive to the human mind? Also, why do liberals feel the need to get on such a moral high horse in their condemnation of economic truths?”

Gosh, BS, I'm not sure about that second question ... perhaps it's because, when it comes to running an economy, conservatives are stupid fucking retards.

Could that be it? I'm just guessing, of course.

In case I haven't thanked you lately, please let me do so now. It must be a horrible job, sifting through the drool and drivel on the Right-Wing Whack-Job sites so I don't have to bother. It's an ugly job, but you do a wonderful job of it, and I thank you very much.

Thanks to you I can enjoy the amusement of watching their stupidity without having to wade through their piles of crap, personally. You deserve a medal for public service, above and beyond....etc., etc........

You mean conservatives like this one?

I went to read the article in The Financial Post and then it occurred to me why a valid theory is considered counter-intuitive. Because the free-market fuckers remain silent for too long about all the distortions in the market until the crisis is full-blown. And the fact that that's been happening since time immemorial causes the rest of us to think that the only people interested in these theories are either really, really stupid, or are dishonest money grubbers.

I read The Globe and Mail every day and have been for several years now. Why is it that the distortions in the financial economy that other people have known about for years are just now being reported on?

Er, does this Foster guy really not understand that "valid" and "true" are entirely different concepts? Just because a theory is valid doesn't mean it's true.

For example:

All men have wings.
Socrates is a man.
Therefore, Socrates has wings.

Is a valid argument. But it's not true.

But Chet, you're referencing the "Fallacy of the Undistributed Middle", which is every conservative wingnut's favourite fall back position.

Actually, market economics is a valid theory...it's the assumptions underpinning its value as a principle around which society should be organised that are disputed.

One thing I got from reading Peter Foster's column is the tone that these types often adopt..that critics are always soooo stupid. I think that, more than anything, is what prevents a lot of people from listening to them. It's dreary...they're dreary.

In the end, I can never escape the fact that people like Foster and other economic libertarians are too often just plain selfish and/or over-confident about their own brilliance. Also, a lot them seem make their living completely outside any marketplace in which the value of their product can be fairly established...like writing for the corporate press, for example.

Don't change the channel and call something fellacious. Why are you always talking about fellatio? Can't we have some civility here? :(

These are often same people who sneer at psychology, the study of individual human behaviour as being pseudoscience and everyone should stop complaining about their mental problems and grow up.

But economics, the study of group human behaviour, pretends to be a hard science, you know, one with laws, like gravity, causality, physics. When something appears to violate physical laws, the laws are amended to reflect the better understanding of reality. When something appears to violate economic "truths", then the violator is blamed.

Thanks for the link CrabGrass (w/o all the fancy characters)

I dropped by and left a comment

"Canadian Blue Lemons

We're Canadians,
We're Conservative
and We're Sour!

oh yeah, and we're intellectually challenged!"

What do you figger the odds that I will be immediately classified as one of the TROLLS (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) and WILL BE DELETED IMMEDIATELY WITHOUT EXPLANATION?

I especially liked the lemon hisself's comment that the media was so out to take down GWB that they would take down the whole economy to do so.......I want some of whatever that guy smokes.....

But thanx for the laughs.......
