Dear Raphael: Just fucking bite me, OK?

Despite the fact that Blogging Tory Raphael Alexander does have his occasional moments of lucidity, he still has an annoying habit of lapsing into stupid-speak, as he does here:

But you know the saying: Normal Person + Internet Anonymity + Audience = Foul-mouthed troll. There are bloggers who use this modus operandi. Canadian Cynic comes to mind.

I'll tell you what, Raph -- why don't you toddle off and do some research into the proper definition of the word "troll." And when you finally figure it out, you come back and explain it to the rest of us. We could all use the shits and giggles.

What a total twat.

P.S. There is much more coming on this topic, but I figured I'd just give Raph a good spanking for now.

Then again, there's sooey's opinion to consider as well...

Good of Sooey to comment on (in an entertaining way) one aspect of the whole "real name/anonymity/pseudonymity" dynamic of the cybersphere.

But I sympathise with CC's irritation over this cavalier and defamatory use of the word "troll." A troll is a persistent disrupter, and as far as I know, CC doesn't troll.

Now, some rightwingers, being so bull-goose loony and stupid, don't know that their witless and annoying presence constitutes trolling, but those are exceptions.

Righty blogs themselves, as I've always maintained, are troll-breeding programmes...the Righty blogger articulates the smear, the ignoramuses pop by, get their blood angried up, and fan out and bother the rest of us.

En Francais, a name is just "what-I-call-myself," or words to that effect, but to many anglophones, names are mystical. If you're the kind of person who cannot deal easily with change, another person's use of any name other than a given name can be construed as a violation of natural law, and we all know what violations of the law of nature do to conservatives. Instead of making judgments about people who resent our use of such social flexibility, I believe we should start showing some understanding and compassion.

As for me, I feel compelled to use an alternate identity to keep my neighbors from learning how how rarely I take my medication. (At least for me, it has nothing to do with MPD.)

would you life for me to explain "troll" to ralphie?

I appreciate your attempt to find deeper meaning in this, Seer, but that really is a distraction. Some people with a great deal of integrity decide to use their real names in cyberspace as a self-imposed limitation on what they are afraid they might end up saying (in the heat of the moment, after a bad day, when the medication is off, etc. etc.) and that's fine. I personally think that defeats the whole purpose and genius of cyberspace...that it is the realm of pure ideas that should never have to intersect with real life in ways that limit communication and the exchange of information.

That motivation to identify oneself might have been true of some Conservatives (and given how little self-control they seem to have, I can understand why they'd do this), but as we see, it ends up snaring them in a trap...since others know who they are, they feel they're at a disadvantage and end up using increasingly desperate tactics to even the score or achieve a level playing field, to the point where their presence in cyberspace spills over into real life, in ways that are immoral and quite often illegal and completely out of proportion to whatever problem they're addressing.

Poster children for anger-management and headcases (like Mike Brock, and Richard Evans) should have known long ago that they cannot be comfortable with the rest of the world knowing what they really think and who they are, given how vindictive they can be. They should have remained anonymous.

I learned that a long time ago.

i rarely see cc comment on other blogs, and then his participation could hardly be considered trolling. barring a case of sock-puppetry (and i've seen no evidence of any), the charge is bullshit.

Actually Sheena, you are the one acting like a troll, and you are doing it RIGHT NOW...

Which is, as defined by rules of netiquette, peristently making remarks that are only designed to enflame people(i.e TROLL FOR REACTION) because they are rank bloody nonsense.

There is no crying in Blogball... and there's no use in whining about trolls because that FEEDS them too... In reality, the net.grownups know how to ignore trolls instead of whinging about them. If they really are trolls they will quickly die without getting responses and go away to greener pastures.

If they are genuine comments instead of "TROLLING" for reactions from people then the net.grownups (not net.crybabies) will figure it out eventually without having a nag/scold lecture from somebody like you Sheena.

And that's all I will remark on this so as to not feed YOUR Trollish behaviour.

Sheena said...

Well. If you broaden the definition of troll to = Attention Whore, then 10 bonus points to somnambulist woman.

But if you still think that routinely scouring blogs of people you find icky or gross or ugly and still poking a stick in their eye for shits and giggles is time well spent, then ROCK ON!

Zombie Jesus said...

Technically CC doesn't troll.

A troll is someone who says something outrageous for the response it will provoke. CC posts responses to the mind meltingly stupid, hypocritical, or just plain evil things things that other people say on their blogs. In this case it is people on the Blogging Tories roll or people that are picking a fight such as Richard Evans (seek help Dick).

CC isn't making shit up to get a response or twisting something said to make it seem worse then it is. You follow the link through that is what is said.

And that is not trolling. Yes "bad" language is used, and yes it isn't polite. But being rude isn't trolling. If I went on SDA and called out Kate (Cate?) McMillian for being a racist piece of shit in the comments of a post in which she called all natives useless welfare cases I wouldn't be trolling. I would be responding to a racist stereotype she was propagating and that is not trolling.

If you want to see trolling look at Dick Evans and canadiancynic.net, that is not only the sign of a sick, sick mind, it is trolling. He is attempting to provoke a response based on a falsehood (sorry I should call it what it really is, a lie), he then acts in a manner that is extremely trollish (ie look what you are making me do). That is trolling and he is doing it under his real name doesn't make it any more brave, it just makes it more pathetic that he is so deluded that he could think that a neutral third party would look at this and think that he is the sane one.

Being rude and mocking is not trolling, and "hiding" behind a pseudonym doesn't make it trolling. Given the history of the people CC is mocking, that just makes you smart.

Don't pretend the moment CC's real name becomes public some of you assholes aren't going to be flooding emails to employers (current and potential), landlords, bank managers, friends, co-workers, bartenders, and anyone else who may have a connection no matter how small with a stream of crap designed to make CC's life unmanageable.

Are you suggesting that I could possibly be shocked by anything?

And I believe cooch is more correctly spelted "cunt", Ti-Guy...

That would be uncivil. I used "cooch" because the last time I came across the word was over at your blog...which I visit from time to time, sometimes for a chuckle, but mostly to figure how entrenched the infantilisation and solipsism of slightly younger people than I am have become.

Raphael Alexander said...

I'm sure Sheena reads CC for the reason many do. To hear new and creative variations of outrage.

And let's not be nit-picky here. What is the essential difference between Don Beemer and CC? I have heard CC employ the exact expression "Harper's penis in your mouth" that got Beemer "outed". In fact, I recall it was CC who used Janke in context with "how high will you jump" and Janke responds "MMMMMPPPPPPPPPHHHH?"

Classy.

I don't support CC being outed. Despite his crude, crass, vulgar, tactless, disrespectful, petulant, childish, inane, hyperbolic commentary, it does have merit as entertainment value. Just like his favourite TV show up there, it is "kind of funny" to imagine God asking his "girlfriend" if he doesn't have to wear a condom on his birthday. Shocking. And funny. That's CC.

What CC does is ultimately harmless because he can be ignored. He's never, or almost never commented at my site. I can pretend he doesn't exist.

But Richard Evans is a psychopath who I think would try to inflict real life harm to CC if he were outed. And that is the basic difference between the two. CC knows he's firmly rooted in "unreality". Richard is rooted in dementia.

I think it’s fair to say that CC “trolls” to the extent that he routinely ventures out on what must sometimes be a rather thankless and dispiriting fishing expedition to bring his readers the latest “catch of the day” from the fetid swamps of right-wing political groupthink, as well as assorted murky bayous of ignorance and scientific illiteracy. The resulting haul is then filleted with meticulous precision and served up for our enjoyment in a ribald mélange of profanity, sarcasm and dry wit. Bravo to you, good sir!

Ti-Guy said...

Besides, he's the only non-conservative blogger whose blog is dedicated to doing that. Someone's got to do it, after all.

Practically all conservative and Conservative blogs (not to mention elite conservative discourse) seem to be far more focussed on ridiculing/condemning their adversaries than actually talking about conservatism and conservative ideas...which just goes to show that modern conservatism is mostly reactionary.

Really...as an alternative and a critique of other political sensibilities, it offers practically nothing at all. It starts with the anti-rationalism and anti-intellectualism that underpins the conservative analysis of reality and goes downhill from there.

ROTFL

Oh, Cynic's a troll, alright. He just doesn't have the guts to go and troll like a man.

The Seer said...

1. I am supposed to be cooking Sunday dinner.

2. The underlying blog — Tony Raphael Alexander — got this thing going in part with his reference to a remark that "[o]ne wonders how [Blogger] Brock can bear to seperate [sic] Harper's dick from his mouth long enough to eat?"

I once read a book about an imaginary, multi-national but enthnicly homogenous organized crime network in which an offender against the organization's code of silence was disciplined to death in the manner described in TRA post. (It supposedly was a uniquely Sicilian method of execution.) I will say nothing more about this because some mountie might construe it as "thinking murderous thoughts," which. at one time in England, was considered a crime, at least when a subject thought those thoughts against his lawful King.

3. somena woman sez Sheena, is the one acting like a troll, "[w]hich is, as defined by rules of netiquette [as] persistently making remarks that are only designed to enflame people(i.e TROLL FOR REACTION) because they are rank bloody nonsense."

Then somena woman turns around and says "[t]here is no crying in Blogball... and there's no use in whining about trolls because that FEEDS them too... In reality, the net.grownups know how to ignore trolls instead of whinging about them. If they really are trolls they will quickly die without getting responses and go away to greener pastures.

4. Under somena woman's definition of "troll,"it seems to me that ty-guy is acting like a troll when he says things like "I appreciate your attempt to find deeper meaning in this, Seer, but that really is a distraction," because he knows this is going to inflame me. Except then somena woman gives him an out by denying me the right to whine or cry.

5. Under these rules, who can win?

Red Tory said...

"Troll like a man"... Now there's a curious expression. Is there something particularly "manly" about being a jerk? (Don't answer that; it's a rhetorical question.)

Besides, I think we've agreed for the most part that CC doesn't "troll" in conventional sense of that word as it's understood on the Intertubes.

Ti-Guy said...

I'm hoping CC will delete poor old sad old Patsy's comments before too many people feel obliged to respond to them. Once Patsy gets started, God only knows when he'll stop.

I'd troll his blog "like a man", but the delicate Patsy Ross moderates and deletes comments too often to make it all that fun.

From wikipedia:

"An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]"

Sadly, as crude and as rude as CC can be, I don't think he wants an emotional response as much as he wants to shake the stupid out of some people. Unfortunately, the stupid never goes without a fight.

Sheena said...

Once again, for effect: When I asked Raphael Alexander how he could be so indifferent to the perpetual torture of 14-year old Omar Kadhr, the swine upbraided me for inaccuracy.

Kadhr was all of FIFTEEN when he was first captured and denied all of his human rights and being subjected to constant torture.

So, evidently, my concern for him was misplaced.

Idiots like RA might not use cuss-words, but the products of their brains are far more offensive than even the most coarse words. They string together profanity-free sentences to describe the most utterly diseased, debased beliefs, and imagine that they're fit for polite company.

They're not. They're monsters.

Raphael,

Who the fuck told you that I cared? My initial post wasn't addressed to you.

Your witless incomprehension prompted me to reply to you, and I still don't care if you have the sense to feel ashamed for what you said about the torture of 15-year old.

Actually, this next part is for you: Take responsibility for the fact that you bragged about how you thought the torture of a 15-year old boy was essentially a benign fact. Realize that what you wrote was sick and wrong. Realize that there's more to being offensive than mere profanity and coarse buffoonery.

When the West countenances the torture of children, we lose any and all claims to lecture others about civility.

You can continue to type dismissals of my criticisms out of some sort of missplaced pride, but I hope my words affect you on a deeper level.

Oh get bent. You obviously have no idea what the hell you're talking about. What you're doing right now is trolling. Waltzing into someone else's blog uninvited, to stir up a bunch of shit with your attitude rather than adding to the conversation and doing it solely for the attention it generates. Usually involving made up 'facts' and controversies. There's the spirit. There's the definition. There's the situation we're seeing right now.

And for the rest of the rightie invaders...this is CC's blog. If you don't like what you see here, move along. Nobody is forcing you to remain here. You keep talking about how he's beneath you and a horrible person and a troll and stuff... BUT YOU KEEP COMING BACK. Obviously you're in love.
