Dear blogosphere: About these here awards contests ...
*Sigh*. I was hoping to just ignore this tedious series of Bloggie-oriented awards contests, but here comes another one. So, at the risk of pulling rank on my co-bloggers, can you please just leave us out of this?
Seriously, I'm not interested because this particular incarnation of the Canadian Blog Awards has precisely the same fatal flaw as all of the ones before it -- the winners will be decided by the online voting having the shit freeped out of it. And, after a while, that starts to get a mite tiring. But there's actually more to it than just that.
Specifically, the concept of an overall "Best Blog" award just grates on me, for a fairly obvious reason. It pits a number of quality Canadian blogs from the Left against an equal number of lying, hypocritical, piece of shit blogs from the Right. You think I exaggerate? Consider that the nominees for "Best Blog" already include both the stellar "The Galloping Beaver" and the execrable pile of dreck "Small Dead Animals."
Now, I don't know about Dave over at TGB but, personally, given that I take a certain amount of pride in not publishing hideously inaccurate crap, I wouldn't want to share the same nomination page with pathological liar and screech harpy Kate McMillan. And the thought of competing against her along the lines of quality? Pardon my French but, fuck that. There ain't no way I'm having anything to do with any competition in which voters seriously have to choose which of TGB or SDA is a "better" blog.
A trivial solution would be to simply abolish the "Best Blog" category entirely, and make every category more specific. Let lefty blogs compete against each other (as in the recent Lefty Blog Awards), and let the Right fight it out for which of their online cesspools is the least abominable. But really -- to pit those blogs head-to-head against each other? I don't think so. There's just something cosmically wrong about that.
So, y'all have fun, and vote early and vote often, but we here at CC HQ will take a pass on this.
