About that "walking and chewing gum" thing ...

When the hammer drops, it's going to crush the really, really dumb ones first:

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Is the world flat?

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Is the world flat? (laughter)

GOLDBERG: Yes.

SHEPHERD: …I Don’t know.

GOLDBERG: What do you think?

SHEPHERD: I… I never thought about it, Whoopi. Is the world flat? I never thought about it.

BARBARA WALTERS: You’ve never thought about whether the world was round or flat?

SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. How I’m going to feed my child–

WALTERS: Well you can do both.

I'm fairly sure that's not an option there, Babs. Trust me on this one. And Social Services should be thinking seriously about rescuing that child before Shepherd tries to dry it in a microwave or something.

It goes part 'n parcel with the mindset of 'staunch conservatives'--"I haven't thought about it--I'm too busy trying to raise my kids"
Yet they yip about how flip flopping Kerry is, how the MSN is 'bad for the troops!', how Dubya is the second coming...
How come they can't be 'I'm too busy to think about it' then?
Haven't thought about if the world is flat??
And when Whoopi asked her to 'think about it' (I love the way she asked that, btw--is like 'just use your 'god-given sense and give us a thoughtful answer')--"nope!! No time! I'm too busy!!"
How about you try to be busy the next time someone takes out an ad in the paper condemning (rightfully so) a propped up general shilling for Bush instead of having the time to stand on your soapbox yipping about how bad all of us 'lefties' are.

I wonder if Sherri Shepherd believes that other countries exist.

If she hadn't had the oppotunity to actually watch kids grow into adults, she probably wouldn't believe that the two creatures are linked.

I don't think she was being genuine...I think she was engaging in that dodge of trying to maintain some sort of principle by simply refusing to acknowledge a well-established fact.

Who knows? Maybe she is that ignorant. I'd have to actually watch The View and nothing in the world could force me to pay attention that ridiculous yak-fest. Why do they think it's necessary to always have an unteachable moron on the show?

Dear Nonny:

The way CC and his compadrés work, is they hit on things like "The View" and say watching Americans makes you stupid, cuz Americans can't figure out for themselves whether the world is round or flat. (Notice how I neatly dodged taking a position on that controversial issue.)

They way to handle CC and his compadrés is to say "Watching the The Stephen Harper and/or The John Tory frolics makes you smart — eh?"

This leads to Ti-Guy's lecture on how Canada is a "parliamentary democracy," like — adding the hairdresserr to the Stephen & Sandra Show brings the voice of the people to Parliament Hill, eh? Like Stephen Harper rides bhrama bulls at the Stampede, eh?

Sure, we got some nut cases is the US of A. But have you been to Upper Canada lately? Eh?

Ask them that.

Uh...oh...Someone's star spangled feelings are a little tender, I see.

I'm trying to be as fair as I can when it comes to American ignorance, in that I don't believe it's essential or genetic, or anything like that. But American culture certainly does have a high tolerance for the moronic in news and current affairs, judging by the people who are featured in that part of the media.

Of course there are stupid people here, Seer, but they don't show up on news and current events programs, for the most part. They're safely quarantined in Sun newspapers and at The Blogging Tories.

The line about worrying about how to feed her kids is fucking bullshit. I went to her site, she has a 19 month old son. This woman has had a successful TV and movie career since 1995 (No I didn't watch any of it, I just checked IMDB, I was curious if she'd ever done anything worthwhile, she hasn't) so I hardly think she's been having any difficulty coming up with the resources to feed her kid. No doubt he was with a well paid nanny while she was on the show. If you check out her website it's fucking atrocious, she whores out her kid at every opportunity. If you read her message board it's mostly diggers and others giving her shit for being a moron and a couple of insipid fans actually defending her inability to form a coherent thought. Some people are just not worth the resources it takes to keep them alive.

Nah it's a population thing. If say only 29% of your population are complete mental midgets it doesn't sound like much does it?

However when you have a population of 300 million, that's still 87 million people. That's a lot of fucking morons.

How do you think all those traitorous assholes in the US Congress got into office anyway? Same way Bush did... Stupid, short sighted, morons.

I mean shit.. Ashcroft ran against a dead guy and fucking LOST! We hired a guy who trained show horses to run FEMA. Then after he let an entire region drown and get blown away we gave him the fucking Presidential Medal of Ass Kissing and nobody rioted.

That's the US....87 million morons strong.

Maybe so, but the idea that the world is flat and evolution is false is a decidedly right wing idea. So they let a token right winger in to offset things.

And you know what? The View is STILL more balanced than Fox News.

e in md: I really think it's much more of a media and cultural problem than anything fundamental. I've lived all over the world, and one of the essential elements in American culture is this odd worship of this principle that all ideas and all opinions have equal validity.

It's a nice, generous, inclusive quality, but it ends up causing some very big problems...too many bad ideas end up getting more public attention than they deserve and far too many imbeciles get to have careers peddling their shit, which ends up distracting or suckering in credulous rubes and turning off sensible people.

Don't get me wrong...I believe ideas should be allowed unfettered expression (for the most part), but I think it's equally valid for others to be able to say that those ideas are simply stupid...ie, pseudo-scientific, reflections of opinion more than fact, not really generalisable, or outright fabrications. And I don't think it's always necessary for smarter people to have to explain in detail why certain bad ideas, long acknowledged as being bad, are bad.

Why on Earth, for example, has no one ever called Ann Coulter an idiot and a liar straight to her face? Why is that such a crime? If anything, it's certainly not outside the standards of civility she herself sets.
