No, stop! You're killing me!

And hot on the heels of Aaron Unruh's astonishingly ignorant and homophobic rant along with his insulting and dismissive comments thereafter, we have one of his colleagues at "The Politic" lamenting the lack of common civility in the blogosphere.

You cannot make this stuff up.

Shorter Driftglass: Fuck a bunch of civility!

I couldn't agree more.

CC:

Regarding civility...

You're such a hard working blogger. But no one's responding to your blogs, and presumably few are reading your blogs.
Here's the number of comments on your last 9 posts:

0 1 (now 2) 0 0 1 0 0 0 2

Having visited your site from time to time, I would characterize it as follows:

All insult and no insight.

Maybe you don't care. Fine. But if you do care, you'll have to make changes. I recommend putting the insults on the back burner and concentrating on content. Stow the vitriol and say something interesting. Something thought provoking. Hell, maybe something non-partisan.

But you don't need me to tell you that it's your blog and you can do what you want.

Rabbit could have just written that and spared us the long-winded and dull scolding.

Jesus...who's breeding these self-righteous prigs, anyway? How many children could Mrs. Alcock possibly have?

Errr Rabbit, there is no need to comment on CC's Blog,... It is very difficult to improve on near perfection,... although we could all act like a bunch of "DITTO HEADS" if you like,...

Heck you want mindless drooling head to Small Brain Dead Animals, where clapping Harper Seals are welcome ;-)

So when did I scold, ti-guy? I don't give a damn about the "righteousness" of this blog. I was suggesting a way that it might be made more effective - that is to say, how it might make a difference.

If CC is happy the way it is, no problemo. I don't get all excited over a few insults, as you can tell by this reply.

But I do have one question: What exactly are insults suppose to accompish?

Get beyond the insults and look what motivates them...lies, dishonesty, bad thinking and worse science, etc. etc. I think you're focussing on the wrong issue here.

If I were one of CC's targets, I simply wouldn't read his blog. It's as simple as that.

And the purpose of insults is clear. As Sigmund Freud put it: "The first human to hurl an insult instead of a stone was the founder of civilisation."

Apparently you are suggesting that insults circumvent physical assault. Or something. So I guess people who insult others a lot are society's great peacekeepers.

I'm going to go down to my neighbourhood pub and give it a try. Wish me luck.

In other words, business as usual.

Good luck! But please don't dawdle too long at the pub and get back here as soon as possible. The comments section at this blog will be barren and above all, undisciplined, in your absence.

Someone might get insulted, even.

...*cough*prat*cough*

I dunno about that. I don't see any insults here. Which is kind of a shame, really, because the only things that consistently bring me to CC's blog are to see why he's sending me traffic and whether or not that might entail an insult I can post on the list of bloggers' endorsements I've got running on my sidebar.

At the very least, reading CC is like reading MyBlahg with a third the vitriol, fourteen times the humourous snark, and a mercifully more comprehensive repertoire than a bunch of sexual innuendo. Entirely good shit... or good enough, anyway.
