President Smirky McFlightSuit all over that ... big water thingy over there.

From the Washington Post, in which Admiral Bunnypants agonizes over the recent devastation in Southeast Asia from his golf cart somewhere in Texas:

Earlier yesterday, White House spokesman Trent Duffy said the president was confident he could monitor events effectively without returning to Washington or making public statements in Crawford, where he spent part of the day clearing brush and bicycling.

Responding to mounting criticism about his seeming indifference, Bush snapped at reporters, "I think a lot of people misunderestimate my concern. Now, watch this drive."

Bush doesn't need to care. His "base" certainly don't. The victims are all the wrong color and faith.

And besides, he's on vacation, for heaven's sake. Can't the man get a little rest before those grueling inauguration parties begin?

From CC:

To my loyal readers (and all 11 of you know who you are): I want to assure you that I am not simultaneously posting under the name of "Jay Gatsby" to make me (and all the rest of you, for that matter) look unspeakably brilliant. I promise.

Mr. Gatsby gets his knickers in a knot in pointing out that Bush's "Watch this drive." comment refers to a months-old event. Of course it does -- anyone with an ounce of sense can read the date on the story I link to. As almost all of you have figured out, I use various literary devices to make my point. That one is called "satire," and I frequently post clearly-bogus news releases to get my message across. (Still with me there, Jay?)

I certainly didn't invent that technique. Andy Borowitz over at The Borowitz Report is a master of the tactic, and I only wish I was half as good as that, but I can live with it.

It is however, pretty pathetic, when you actually have to explain to someone that you're using satire. I feel like Brent having to explain something to Hank on "Corner Gas". (Obligatory Canadian entertainment reference there.)

Anyway, sad as it is, the reality is that we're not all the Einsteins our parents would like us to be. It just seems that way every time Mr. Gatsby posts.

P.S. As further proof, I direct you to Mr. Gatsby's followup comment to my post "Canada coming through in the crunch." Sometimes, I feel like a comedian who has to preface everything he says with, "OK, now I'm about to tell a joke. Are you still with me? Goooood, here it comes ..."
